New Edinburg Fire Department responded to a dishwasher fire on Russell Road Monday morning.

Two donations to the New Edinburg Museum last week: Marty Gill gave me two horseshoes dug up from the area of the horse corral that was once in town, and Cecil Sanders donated a book written by him entitled "The Future: An Amillenial Perspective." If you have a book written by someone from New Edinburg, like this one, I'd love to archive a copy on the museum for posterity (and reading). Homecoming at Macedonia FWB Church was a sheer delight this past Sunday.  The southern gospel quartet The Kinsmen kept the congregation entertained with music and light humor both before and after a lavish potluck lunch. Karen Thompson was backed by the Kinsmen as she moved the audience with "I Bowed On My Knees and Cried Holy." Mrs. Betty Green was visited by her daughter Teresa Gatewood and Teresa's daughter Brenttany.  I had not seen Teresa in over a decade and enjoyed talking to her again.

Lois Johnson, after a long illness, passed away April 10.  She will be sorely missed by family and friends.

Bob Kleinbeck reports Geneva (Landers) Everright is now in a nursing home in Pine Bluff.  She is 98 years old.

Controversy within the Fire Department's long overdue meeting last Thursday resulted in one member quitting (that would be me) and firefighter James Gill demanding that the bylaws be revised for clarity over procedural and personnel issues that have been hanging for a long time.  Marty Gill is reported to have read the board of directors the riot act over the personal behavior of certain firefighters. There will be a meeting of the board of directors this month to address these issues. Fire chief Randy Linzy names Major "Boo" McClellan assistant fire chief and training officer Allan May, due to his ill health, appoints Steven Linzy and James Gill as assistant training officers. Be advised that all area residents who pay fire dues are entitled in input on fire department matters.

While walking home from that meeting, I was stopped and searched for concealed weapons by one State Trooper and two County Deputies on a tip that I was in possession of a collapsible baton.  Of course, they found nothing because I am NOT retarded.  Apparently someone thinks I'm dangerous enough that I'm worthy of three law enforcement officers.  I appreciate the compliment.  I'm now operating under the impression that someone abused his/her authority in order to bring that much muscle down on me, and all reading this should be concerned; if I can be targeted, then so can you. Kudos to Trooper Rowland for his professional demeanor and pleasant attitude.

Adding to the rash of thefts in this area: new resident Mark Schienle, who hails from Wisconsin and lives in the former Louise Sledd house, reports that his Get-Rid-Of-It trash can was stolen from his yard on or about March 27. We all feel positive someone should have seen this in the middle of town; if you have knowledge of this incident, please contact him.

I hope everyone is having a great 2012 so far. As of this writing, major rain is moving into the area. We complain about it now, but we'll need the water later.

Tyler Attwood visited with his NEHS classmate Matthew Blackmon last week; Matthew's been in and out of the hospital but is doing better.

There will be a baby girl shower for Amber and Brandon Martin, Sunday, Jan. 15 at 2pm at Macedonia Church.

Macedonia managed to pull the wool over Brother Billy Wilson's eyes for quite some time in arranging a special surprise birthday party for him last Sunday. 141 were in attendance. Bro. Billy turned 70 on Jan. 6. Deacons Ricky Sanders and Tommy Green spent an hour roasting Bro. Billy to the delight of the congregation, and the guest took it all in good stride. The Gospel group “Kingdom Bound” performed for an hour before an excellent potluck dinner was served in the fellowship hall, and then we returned for another hour of music by the group and by various congregation members. Nell Brown painted a large and detailed portrait of all the places Bro. Billy has served while in the ministry. All in all, Pastor Billy Wilson was greatly touched by the special day planned by his family and friends. Personally, I have never seen a church congregation honor and treat their pastor as fantastic as Macedonia FWB does Bro. Billy.

Donations to the New Edinburg Museum last week included a NEHS gym bag (given by Tyler Attwood), a 1960s NEHS cheerleader jacket (donated by Mary Jane Attwood), and a copy of the New Edinburg Eagle newspaper (given by Clyde Moseley). Let's stop a minute and explain the story behind this newspaper. In the early 1940s, before yearbooks were the thing, the senior high school produced a few issues of an in-house newspaper revolving around the school itself and their classmates who were at war. There are many photocopies floating around, and I have several of those on display, but this is the first honest-to-gosh copy of the newspaper itself I've ever seen. Thanks to all who added to this town's museum.

We received at least two inches of much needed rain last week with more rain coming in this week.  Temperatures are warm for this time of the year.

Mr. and Mrs. Floyd and Nell Brown donated to the Museum a scrapbook put together by the late Noma Watkins.  The book contains memories and documents pertaining to the FHA chapte at NEHS from the '60s and '70s.  With the scrapbook came three framed pictures of FHA officers Diana McClellan, Paula Splawn and Ruth Ann Murrell.  It was Mrs. Watkins' wish that these items have a good home where they could be seen by all, and the Browns saw fit to place them within the New Edinburg Museum.  The museum will be closed for the month of December for renovations and re-open sometime in early January.

Many remember Mrs. Watkins as the Home Economics teacher at NEHS for many years.  She was well beloved by students and faculty alike.

Larry Hamilton was buried this past Saturday at Piney Grove. The funeral was followed by a wake and dinner for the family at the West Saline Community Center with well over 100 in attendance.

Huey Lodge #78, New Edinburg, will sponsor a soup and chili supper Saturday starting at 4pm. The cost is $6, the menu is soup, chili, dessert and drinks, and it's all you can eat. Everyone is welcome!

The New Edinburg Museum will be open this Sunday from Noon to four. It be closed during the month of December for renovation and will reopen sometime in early January. This winter, I'll also start a project of collecting names and dates from all the cemeteries in this area. Yes, I know there's a cemetery book, but it's outdated. Once everything's written down, I'll create a computer database for genealogical research and share it with surrounding libraries.

Even though it's halfway through November, it's still warm and dry. People in this area apparently have been pretty safe about burning outside, since we've had no fire outbreaks in many months although other areas in the county seem plagued with them.

With modern gun season open last Saturday, hunters are reporting mixed success and many think the deer population is significantly smaller than in previous years.

Brother Billy and Mrs. Glenda Wilson will be having Open House at their parsonage this Sunday, Nov. 13, from 2-5pm.

The New Edinburg Volunteer Fire Department assisted Kingsland Fire Department with a grass fire on Tower Road last Wednesday afternoon. Other than some hay bales, there was no property damage.

The New Edinburg Museum will not be open this Sunday. Starting this month, I'll be opening it on 1^st and 3^rd Sunday afternoons like I did last winter, so look for its hallowed doors to be open again on the 20^th.

We're full swing into the deer seasons. Since deer are no longer checked at the store, I have no real idea what the body count is. Modern gun season is near; please, everyone be safe on the stand or off.

Bro. Billy Wilson of Macedonia FWB Church is currently hospitalized but is doing well. A correction from last week: Macedonia's Fall Festival is, in fact, THIS Saturday, October 22, starting at 11am. Macedonia will have booths, games, and an inflatable playground for children, and a cake walk. Later that evening, there will be a hay ride and singing. Tommy Green will once again be making his famous hobo soup, and chili will be served that evening. Thanks to Macedonia Church for providing safe, sane, and Godly activities for this season.

The New Edinburg Museum will be open this Sunday afternoon from 1 to 5pm. Visitors this weekend included: David and Priscilla Gracey of Judsonia and Dan and Martha Stuckey and Beth Stuckey McLain of Jacksonville. The Graceys, Civil War era students, are taking a slow tour of all the battle sites in southern Arkansas and stopped by to see the museum's relic collection. I had an excellent time visiting with them and the Stuckey family (who I had not seen in over 30 years). Some of you may remember the Stuckeys as related to the Attwood family, and I spent some time filling Dan in on who was still with us and who had passed on to the Great Beyond.

And... speaking of the Great Beyond: I didn't mention last week the conversation between Joye and Paula Splawn and myself during the Last Decade Reunion as we shared ghost stories concerning the old school building. The Splawns related their encounters on that property during their stay in the 1960s and early 1970s, but I was pleased to know they were basically hearing the same things I and a couple of others have heard... doors unlocking, opening and closing, footsteps in the hallway, childrens' voices and so on. I have the added privilege of having our resident spook visiting the museum outside of business hours and moving things around. If there's one thing I can't stand, it's a ghost who won't put things back where he found them.

Fire fighting training concludes this week at New Edinburg Fire Department. Mr. Logan Shaw is our newest firefighter and seems to grasp the fundamentals of fire fighting very well.

The Chicot-Trace chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution toured the New Edinburg Museum this past Saturday morning; I gave an impromptu presentation on local area history which mostly consisted of a two hour Q&A session. We all had a good time. Members present were: Doris Faulkner, Clora Parham (wife of former NEHS Superintendent Edward Parham), Cindy Crum, Millie and Bill Slocum, Melrose Bagwell, Helen Goggans, Kathy Wright, Katreia Abbott, Barbara Jones, Agnes Phillips, and Barbara Drye. Mrs. Joann Hall donated an antique mechanical pencil of a type once sold at NEHS in the 1940s with the school's name and address stamped on it, and over the course of that Saturday a couple of nagging historical questions were answered by former students.

Later that day, the NEHS “Last Decade” Reunion met in the West Saline Community Center Cafeteria with an attendance of roughly 70. The potluck supper was of ample and I got to re-acquaint myself with several old friends who I had not seen in decades. All in all, a great time was had by all, and we hope to repeat the event next year. Not seen in these halls for several years were former faculty members Mr. Edward Parham, Mrs. Evelyn Norris, Mr. Gene Franklin and Mrs. Jonalyn Reep, and all four were honored guests there that night. Thanks go to Annette (Miller) Luff and Connie (Miller) Shaw who were the primary organizers of the event.

Mr. and Mrs. Jason and Ashley McClellan will be given a wedding shower at Macedonia Church this coming Saturday evening at 6pm. The couple are registered with Wal-Mart. Macedonia's Fall Festival will be on Oct. 29... details to be announced.

Happy anniversary wishes to Larry and Becky Briant (Oct. 8).

Fall-like weather has descended on us... finally. We're waking to chilly mornings and cool afternoons that are a welcome break from the heat of the Summer.

The “Last Ten Year Reunion” which will be this Saturday, Oct. 8., from 4pm to 8:30pm in the West Saline Community Center cafeteria. It revolves around the classes of 1975 to 1985, the last ten senior classes of NEHS, but is completely open to anyone who attended NEHS at any time. The meal will be potluck. Many are excited about this event, as am I.

The NEHS Class of 1957 will have its annual reunion at the New Edinburg Civic Center this Saturday at 10am.

I talked to Mrs. Bobbie Moseley last week, and she's doing much better. Miss Bobbie donated copies of NEHS yearbooks 1948-1951 to the Museum. Alas, no 1952 yearbook in sight yet, but I'm still searching.

Macedonia Church's Fall Festival will be October 22. More details as the date approaches. I attended Sunday School and services there this past Sunday as well as dined with friends as they held their Pastor Appreciation Day for Pastor Billy Wilson. Bro. Wilson is a fine preacher and a perfect fit for that congregation. Here's praying for many more years with him in the pulpit there. The potluck dinner was, as always, excellent with more food than anyone could eat.

Introductory fire training is in progress at the New Edinburg Volunteer Fire Department. Next week will be Personal Protective Equipment classes.
