We received at least two inches of much needed rain last week with more rain coming in this week.  Temperatures are warm for this time of the year.

Mr. and Mrs. Floyd and Nell Brown donated to the Museum a scrapbook put together by the late Noma Watkins.  The book contains memories and documents pertaining to the FHA chapte at NEHS from the '60s and '70s.  With the scrapbook came three framed pictures of FHA officers Diana McClellan, Paula Splawn and Ruth Ann Murrell.  It was Mrs. Watkins' wish that these items have a good home where they could be seen by all, and the Browns saw fit to place them within the New Edinburg Museum.  The museum will be closed for the month of December for renovations and re-open sometime in early January.

Many remember Mrs. Watkins as the Home Economics teacher at NEHS for many years.  She was well beloved by students and faculty alike.

Larry Hamilton was buried this past Saturday at Piney Grove. The funeral was followed by a wake and dinner for the family at the West Saline Community Center with well over 100 in attendance.

Huey Lodge #78, New Edinburg, will sponsor a soup and chili supper Saturday starting at 4pm. The cost is $6, the menu is soup, chili, dessert and drinks, and it's all you can eat. Everyone is welcome!

The New Edinburg Museum will be open this Sunday from Noon to four. It be closed during the month of December for renovation and will reopen sometime in early January. This winter, I'll also start a project of collecting names and dates from all the cemeteries in this area. Yes, I know there's a cemetery book, but it's outdated. Once everything's written down, I'll create a computer database for genealogical research and share it with surrounding libraries.

Even though it's halfway through November, it's still warm and dry. People in this area apparently have been pretty safe about burning outside, since we've had no fire outbreaks in many months although other areas in the county seem plagued with them.

With modern gun season open last Saturday, hunters are reporting mixed success and many think the deer population is significantly smaller than in previous years.

Brother Billy and Mrs. Glenda Wilson will be having Open House at their parsonage this Sunday, Nov. 13, from 2-5pm.

The New Edinburg Volunteer Fire Department assisted Kingsland Fire Department with a grass fire on Tower Road last Wednesday afternoon. Other than some hay bales, there was no property damage.

The New Edinburg Museum will not be open this Sunday. Starting this month, I'll be opening it on 1^st and 3^rd Sunday afternoons like I did last winter, so look for its hallowed doors to be open again on the 20^th.

We're full swing into the deer seasons. Since deer are no longer checked at the store, I have no real idea what the body count is. Modern gun season is near; please, everyone be safe on the stand or off.

As of this writing, storms will be moving in this week and providing a little rain. Judge Spears has ordered a burn ban for Cleveland County. Things are dangerously dry. Bro. Billy Wilson of Macedonia FWB Church is currently hospitalized but is doing well. A correction from last week: Macedonia's Fall Festival is, in fact, THIS Saturday, October 22, starting at 11am. Macedonia will have booths, games, and an inflatable playground for children, and a cake walk. Later that evening, there will be a hay ride and singing. Tommy Green will once again be making his famous hobo soup, and chili will be served that evening. Thanks to Macedonia Church for providing safe, sane, and Godly activities for this season.

The New Edinburg Museum will be open this Sunday afternoon from 1 to 5pm. Visitors this weekend included: David and Priscilla Gracey of Judsonia and Dan and Martha Stuckey and Beth Stuckey McLain of Jacksonville. The Graceys, Civil War era students, are taking a slow tour of all the battle sites in southern Arkansas and stopped by to see the museum's relic collection. I had an excellent time visiting with them and the Stuckey family (who I had not seen in over 30 years). Some of you may remember the Stuckeys as related to the Attwood family, and I spent some time filling Dan in on who was still with us and who had passed on to the Great Beyond.

And... speaking of the Great Beyond: I didn't mention last week the conversation between Joye and Paula Splawn and myself during the Last Decade Reunion as we shared ghost stories concerning the old school building. The Splawns related their encounters on that property during their stay in the 1960s and early 1970s, but I was pleased to know they were basically hearing the same things I and a couple of others have heard... doors unlocking, opening and closing, footsteps in the hallway, childrens' voices and so on. I have the added privilege of having our resident spook visiting the museum outside of business hours and moving things around. If there's one thing I can't stand, it's a ghost who won't put things back where he found them.

Fire fighting training concludes this week at New Edinburg Fire Department. Mr. Logan Shaw is our newest firefighter and seems to grasp the fundamentals of fire fighting very well.

The Chicot-Trace chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution toured the New Edinburg Museum this past Saturday morning; I gave an impromptu presentation on local area history which mostly consisted of a two hour Q&A session. We all had a good time. Members present were: Doris Faulkner, Clora Parham (wife of former NEHS Superintendent Edward Parham), Cindy Crum, Millie and Bill Slocum, Melrose Bagwell, Helen Goggans, Kathy Wright, Katreia Abbott, Barbara Jones, Agnes Phillips, and Barbara Drye. Mrs. Joann Hall donated an antique mechanical pencil of a type once sold at NEHS in the 1940s with the school's name and address stamped on it, and over the course of that Saturday a couple of nagging historical questions were answered by former students.

Later that day, the NEHS “Last Decade” Reunion met in the West Saline Community Center Cafeteria with an attendance of roughly 70. The potluck supper was of ample and I got to re-acquaint myself with several old friends who I had not seen in decades. All in all, a great time was had by all, and we hope to repeat the event next year. Not seen in these halls for several years were former faculty members Mr. Edward Parham, Mrs. Evelyn Norris, Mr. Gene Franklin and Mrs. Jonalyn Reep, and all four were honored guests there that night. Thanks go to Annette (Miller) Luff and Connie (Miller) Shaw who were the primary organizers of the event.

Mr. and Mrs. Jason and Ashley McClellan will be given a wedding shower at Macedonia Church this coming Saturday evening at 6pm. The couple are registered with Wal-Mart. Macedonia's Fall Festival will be on Oct. 29... details to be announced.

Fall-like weather has descended on us... finally. We're waking to chilly mornings and cool afternoons that are a welcome break from the heat of the Summer.

The “Last Ten Year Reunion” which will be this Saturday, Oct. 8., from 4pm to 8:30pm in the West Saline Community Center cafeteria. It revolves around the classes of 1975 to 1985, the last ten senior classes of NEHS, but is completely open to anyone who attended NEHS at any time. The meal will be potluck. Many are excited about this event, as am I.

The NEHS Class of 1957 will have its annual reunion at the New Edinburg Civic Center this Saturday at 10am.

I talked to Mrs. Bobbie Moseley last week, and she's doing much better. Miss Bobbie donated copies of NEHS yearbooks 1948-1951 to the Museum. Alas, no 1952 yearbook in sight yet, but I'm still searching.

Macedonia Church's Fall Festival will be October 22. More details as the date approaches. I attended Sunday School and services there this past Sunday as well as dined with friends as they held their Pastor Appreciation Day for Pastor Billy Wilson. Bro. Wilson is a fine preacher and a perfect fit for that congregation. Here's praying for many more years with him in the pulpit there. The potluck dinner was, as always, excellent with more food than anyone could eat.

Introductory fire training is in progress at the New Edinburg Volunteer Fire Department. Next week will be Personal Protective Equipment classes.

There's a plague of armchair fire chiefs in the area who like to criticize the NEFD but can't quite seem to find the guts to show up, suit up, and school us on how it's done. Now's the time to demonstrate what you're made of.

This community lost two more residents this week with the passing of Buddy Reaves and Jewell St. John.

The Fire Department held a night time drill this past Monday at the West Saline Community Center. A reminder: there is some mix up as to where our fire department's boundaries of responsibility begin and end. Those living on the Russell Road up to and including the residence of Bobby McKinney fall under the New Edinburg Fire Department and that's where your dues should be mailed.

There will be a bridal shower for Sara Huddleston Hannah and Timothy Hannah next Sunday afternoon, Sept. 18th at 2:00 p.m. in the fellowship hall of Macedonia FWB Church.

This past week saw slightly cooler temperatures and lower humidity, which allowed for several outdoor activities. The Thompson Reunion was last Saturday at Reaves Cemetery with over 100 in attendance. The next day was Reaves Cemetery Homecoming where the message was delivered by Brother Dwayne Ashcraft and Brother Billy Wilson. In both events, we had good fellowship and fine potluck meals.

I meant to mention this last week but forgot: Judge Gary Spears convinced the Highway Department to fix the enormous potholes up town in front of the fire station and the water office. I've heard they will soon come back and build the area up a little more, but for now their work has helped keep away standing water from there, not to mention pulling out onto the highway a lot easier. The attentive reader will recall that the corner of the water office parking lot, after a large rain, was always ripe for stocking with bass and trout. Judge Spears is also in the process of paving one half of the Marks Cemetery Road starting from Hebron Church. He reports his plans to pave the other half next year as funds allow. Judge Spears has made great progress during his time in office in modernizing our local roads and he is to be congratulated for the work his road department has done.

The Queen and Blackmon families express their appreciation here to Melody Spears and Ronny McManus and the New Edinburg Civic Center for the use of the building for the funeral of Toliver Blackmon last Friday. Though I did not get to attend, I saw the parking spill over, so I'm assuming the crowd was large.

The next quarterly meeting of the West Saline Community Center will be in the cafeteria on September 5^th at 7pm. The next quarterly meeting of the New Edinburg Fire Department Board will be September 8^th at 6:30pm in the fire department training room.

The Last Ten Year Reunion will be on Oct. 8. from 4pm to 8:30pm in the West Saline Community Center cafeteria. It revolves around the classes of 1975 to 1985, the last ten senior classes of NEHS, but is completely open to anyone who attended NEHS at any time. Let me repeat that: anyone who attended or taught at NEHS at any time is welcome through the doors. The meal will be potluck, so if you can cook, bring something good, and if you're like me and can't cook then think about bringing paper plates, cokes, napkins, or whatever.

The latest word on the missing NEHS yearbooks for the museum's collection is that Mr. Wooten served as Superintendent from 1953-1955 and there will be no yearbooks from that period. Thus, two yearbooks are missing from the collection: 1952 and 1956. Mr. Floyd Brown donated to the museum an excellent picture of the Thompson Reunion from circa 1917. I can pick out my grandmother Cara Thompson as a 12 year old girl. I don't remember if I mentioned this before, but Mrs. Lorene (King) Braswell donated a few months ago a picture of a quilting bee at the Howard Smith residence in 1957, and it's filled with several ladies of times past and their children.

Ms. Ava Kasich will appear at the annual “Just Us Girls” program at Kingsland Missionary Baptist Church at 10am on September 10^th.

The attendance Saturday morning for the gravesides services of James Granderson was excellent despite the high temperature and humidity.

Concerning the collection of NEHS yearbooks in the New Edinburg Museum: last week I told you we needed years 1952 through 1956 for a complete collection.  I found out this past weekend from Mrs. Ollie Moring (who learned from Mrs. Geraldine Sanders) that there were three years in the 1950s where the school did not have a yearbook.  The superintendent of that three year period, Mr. H. W. Wooten would not allow yearbooks to be published citing the expense (which is strange, since yearbooks are paid for by the advertisers).  Checking the few class pictures in the West Saline Community Center, I know Mr. Wooten was here in 1953 and 1954, but I don't know if he was here in 1952 or 1955. So, of the five missing yearbooks, I know there should be a 1956, I can count out 1953 and 1954, but I do not know if the other missing yearbook is 1952 or 1955.  If anyone can help me solve this mystery, and if anyone has a copy of 1956 and the mystery year and would like to give it to the museum for the benefit of everyone, please let me know at your convenience.
