July 30 Edition

Wayne Sanders passed away last week the same day I wrote last week's column.  I did not know of his passing until after the funeral.  He will be missed.

Visitors to the New Edinburg Museum last Saturday included: Floyd Brown, Mark and Aletha Schienle, and Angela (Cox) Lynn and daughters from Treemont, MS.

The Thompson Reunion will be August 25 at Reaves Cemetery and the Reaves Cemetery Homecoming will be the following day.  The Trammell Reunion will be there September 1.  Just giving a little heads up.

July 23rd Edition

Psalms Camp will be having a music festival with gospel and bluegrass groups performing July 27 through the weekend.  The gate opens that Friday at 5:30pm with refreshments and meals for sale.

New Edinburg First Baptist Church has installed a new heating and cooling system courtesy of Win-Air.

Congratulations to Sheila Currier for making the Honor Roll at SEARK college.

Macedonia FWB Church's VBS and revival were reported to be both great successes.

Paschal and Rita Parham moved back to Florence Oregon this week.  We'll miss them.  Mr. Pat donated two signs that once belonged to his uncle Ed Parham for the New Edinburg Museum. Speaking of, the museum will be open this Saturday afternoon from noon to 5pm.  It is located in the West Saline Community Center and admission is free.  Feel free to drop by.

Finally a break in the hot weather.  The long drought and 100F+ temperatures ended this week with a few showers and cooler temperatures.  It's nice to go outside and not feel as if you just stepped into an oven.

Macedonia Church's Revival will be July 22 - 25 with Rev. Lonny Burks. Their Vacation Bible School will be July 19th & 20th. Details will be announced later.
West Saline Community Center news: the Jackson Family reunion was last Wednesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons at WSCC with about 75 attending from across the US.  The pork was present is great quantities.  The Wagnon Family reunion was Sunday with about 25 attending.  The 2012 NEHS All School Reunion was last Saturday.  Attendance for that was down this year, probably due to the oppressive heat, with about 75 students and faculty there.  Despite this, we had a great time with door prizes and food galore.  Make plans to attend next year if you missed out this time.
Patronage of the New Edinburg Museum that Saturday was excellent; people like what's going on down there.  NEHS graduate Virginia (Brown) Carter donated her 1970 FFA Sweetheart jacket to the museum (see accompanying picture elsewhere in this edition).  Thanks goes to Virginia for this beautiful and priceless relic.  As I open up the museum on and off again this year, I'll be sure to give a heads up in the paper.

Revival begins at the Macedonia Free Will Baptist Church on July 22 at the morning service with Rev. Lonnie Burks preaching. The revival will be held on the 23 - 25 at 7 p.m.
The All School Reunion is this Saturday starting at 10am in the cafeteria of the WSCC.  All former students, faculty and staff are invited.  Let's have a great crowd this year like we have in the past few years! 

We're losing Pat and Rita Parham later this month and they move back to Oregon.  The Parhams have lived here for 25 years, and Pat is the son of late store owner Kendrick "Tarpey" Parham and a descendant of J. J. T. Kendrick who opened the first store in New Edinburg in 1860..  We'll hate to lose them as neighbors and friends, but wish them well.

The heat's not letting up.  Judge Spears has had us under a burn ban for a couple of weeks now, and the humidity is extremely low, so fires are a very real danger right now.  Take no chances.
The New Edinburg All School Reunion will be July 7 starting at 10am in the cafeteria of the West Saline Community Center (the same ol' place it's been for years now).  Former students, teachers and their families are invited. This has always been a great event and here's hoping we'll break an attendance record this time.

Concerning the WSCC, I was asked a few days ago by a local resident "why bother to maintain the school building, when newer facilities are available?"  I told him I could write out the answer better than I could verbalize it and he should watch this column for his answer.  Here it is: Joann Hall, Kay Childress, Lorraine Taylor, Linda Joyner, Joe Daniel, Sue Sanders, Brice Clay, Jigs Attwood, Anita Knowles, Nolan Brown, Cindi Morris, Odell Wolfe, Gene Franklin, James Rankin, Danny Allen, H. Splawn, Bobby Hyatt, Danny Adams, Debbie Jones, Evelyn Norris, Jane LaBeuff, and a cavalcade of others living and dead who, since 1904, got up every morning and attempted to turn school kids into civilized human beings instead of farm animals.  We owe it to them.  You're either on board, or you're not.  It's an Eagles thing; dig it.

The D. L. Broughton family had a Father's Day supper celebrating all the fathers in that family last Sunday in the cafeteria.

Fresh, young, bright, energetic, bouncing kittens are still available at my house... for free.  Take two, they're small.

I was reminded the other day of the persistent rumor concerning gold buried somewhere on the Marks' Mills battlefield or in the area.  Folks, there is no gold up there and never was.  The Federal wagon train jumped there was returning from supply troops in Camden; there was a small amount of Yankee greenbacks on one of the wagons involved, but I'm sorry to say no massive amounts of gold coins waiting to make someone rich.  I remember Harvey St. John told my dad that as a youth he saw the hole open where the gold was buried, and the footprints around it matched his... which I guess was his way of hinting he had discovered it.  Harvey was also known to tell a tall tale now and then too.

June 12th Edition

Several Macedonia teens attended Camp Beaverfork last week and had an excellent time.

The Aults suffered a car wreck a couple of weeks ago in Fordyce but are doing okay.  Cliff Posey also suffered an accident in Fordyce resulting in an injured shoulder.  Moral (I guess): don't drive in Fordyce.

Monday night we received around a half-inch of much needed rain, with about a quarter inch received one day last week.  We need much more.

The New Edinburg All School Reunion is scheduled for July 7th starting at 10am in the cafeteria of the West Saline Community Center.  Anyone who attended New Edinburg Schools, their families and faculty are invited to attend.  There will be potluck.  Contact Mrs. Frankie Hall for more details.

May 29th Issue

Storms are supposed to move in this week and hopefully relieve us of this long draught we're experiencing.

West Saline Community Center's board will be renovating the building's restrooms this Saturday morning, June 2, starting at 8am.  We will be repainting the rooms and doing some plumbing repairs.   Anyone who would like to join us is welcome to do so.

Macedonia Church's Memorial Day Service was a blessing. Air Force Sergeant Jeremy Grider and his family were honored with a potluck lunch, and all of us veterans in the congregation were asked to stand by the altar while everyone else sang "America."

Aubrey Huddleston hosted the Huddleston Reunion at his home last Sunday afternoon with many friends and family in attendance.

Many of you remember Mrs. Martha Shaddock who taught Home Economics and Science at NEHS for the last few years; her husband and fellow teacher, Mr. James Shaddock passed away May 18.  He was well known in this area as a teacher, minister, and all around great guy.

I understand that some people get rather passionate about candidates, but there's no call for this sort of behavior.

With blackberry winter in the rear view mirror, we're moving into some warmer weather.

New Edinburg Fire Department responded to a dishwasher fire on Russell Road Monday morning.

Two donations to the New Edinburg Museum last week: Marty Gill gave me two horseshoes dug up from the area of the horse corral that was once in town, and Cecil Sanders donated a book written by him entitled "The Future: An Amillenial Perspective." If you have a book written by someone from New Edinburg, like this one, I'd love to archive a copy on the museum for posterity (and reading). Homecoming at Macedonia FWB Church was a sheer delight this past Sunday.  The southern gospel quartet The Kinsmen kept the congregation entertained with music and light humor both before and after a lavish potluck lunch. Karen Thompson was backed by the Kinsmen as she moved the audience with "I Bowed On My Knees and Cried Holy." Mrs. Betty Green was visited by her daughter Teresa Gatewood and Teresa's daughter Brenttany.  I had not seen Teresa in over a decade and enjoyed talking to her again.

Amber Chidester celebrated her sweet 16 birthday with a party at the West Saline Community Center this past Saturday afternoon.

Lois Johnson, after a long illness, passed away April 10.  She will be sorely missed by family and friends.

Macedonia Free Will Baptist Youth Group will be sponsoring a Car Wash 10 - 2 on Saturday, April 14th, at the church to raise funds to support our own Heather Henderson's missions trip to Panama this summer. Please support this very worthy cause.  Macedonia's Homecoming is April 22; their visiting singing group will be The Kinsmen and they will have potluck after services.

Sporadic rain last week kept things damp, but all gardens are in full swing.

Jim Hearnsberger of Thornton (a longtime friend of my late father and well known here) has moved back into the New Edinburg area.  Welcome back, Jim.
