Jim Granderson, as of this writing, is in St. John's Place in Fordyce.  Buddy Reaves had a heart attack Saturday night and hit his head which caused bleeding on the brain.  He had emergency brain surgery Sunday morning to stop the bleeding and remove a blood clot.  He's in JRMC and reported to be doing better.

Birthdays this week include: Ashley Sanders (July 31), Brenttany Gatewood (August 4), Jacob Brown (August 5).

Despite occasional huge thunderstorms, we are still extremely dry.  Please don't burn outside unless you have to do it.

Visitors to the Henry and Rachel Jones home over the last week: Holly and Cole Hanry of Junction City, Allison Dallen of Broken Arrow, OK, and Ricky and Janis McClellan. Allison and Deb Jones visited Peg and Ricky Cole of El Dorado and Holly, Rhett, and Cole Hanry of Junction City last weekend. They celebrated Rhett's birthday with a fish supper.

Ricky and Janis McClellan of Veckville, TX spent the weekend with Larry and Becky Briant. Ricky also visited with John and Sue McClellan.  Doug and Conner McClellan of Searcy visited John and Sue McClellan this weekend also.

Macedonia's revival services last week went well.  Mt. Elba Baptist Church held its revival last week with Evangelist Rodney Grice presiding over the services.

The school supply drive is still on at McClellan's Store.  There are children in this area who will need supplies for this coming year and could use your help!  Contact Kristen Skelton at the store (352-5352) to find out what's needed.  Most of the list I've seen is inexpensive items easily picked up at any chain department store.

The Last Decade Reunion is scheduled for Saturday, September 17 at 4:30pm at New Edinburg High School Cafeteria.  Graduates and attendees of NEHS are invited to come.  It will be potluck.

John Stewart donated a ton of yearbooks belonging to the late Joe Daniel and Michael Frey to the New Edinburg Museum last week.  The official collection is now 1948 through 1985 with the following exceptions: 1952-1956 and 1962.  If you can fill in those gaps and would like to donate yearbooks that could fill those spans, please contact me.  Thank you John for your help.

New Edinburg Column for July 25

The latest meeting for organization of the big Last Ten Reunion was Sunday afternoon.  In attendance this time were Annette Luff, Connie Shaw, Steve Queen and myself.  The biggest hurdle right now is locating a few students who have drifted off.  The final meeting will be August 7 at 3pm. The Last Reunion is for anyone who graduated from 1975 to 1985 at NEHS.  The reunion itself will be September 17th from 4:30pm to 8pm at in the school cafeteria.

The rest of this column is about Macedonia FWB church, like it or not.  They're in revival this week until Wednesday night with Brother Keith Hatton preaching.  I got a taste of his preaching Sunday morning; I attended and ate delicious potluck lunch with the congregation afterwards. There will be a bridal shower for Dakota Moring and Stephanie Hackney on August 6 in the fellowship hall at 6pm.  Lastly, Donnie Knight donated $100 to Macedonia's youth group.

The Macedonia Free Will Baptist Church's VBS closing program was held last Friday night with great attendance and was reported to be a real blessing.   Cottage prayer meetings there were Monday through Wednesday nights of this week, and Revival will begin next Sunday morning with Brother Keith Hatton. The Sunday night service will be at 6 p.m. and Monday through Wednesday nights will begin at 7 p.m.  Everyone is invited to attend.

The Last Decade Reunion for NEHS is still in planning; the next planning meeting will be in the cafeteria at the West Saline Community Center at 2 pm on July 24. The reunion itself is tentatively set for September 17th from 4:30pm to 8pm in the same place.  Anyone who graduated from NEHS from 1975 to 1985 is encouraged to attend.

Jimmy and Michelle Reaves were in Canada for a couple of weeks due to the death of Michelle's father.

Tully and Norma McCoy are being visited by their grand daughter Amberlee from Tennessee.

Last Wednesday was eventful, to say the least.  That afternoon saw sweltering conditions produce a thunderstorm that dumped varying amounts of rain; I received 4.5 inches while those south of town received 1.5 inches or so.  Lightning from the storm struck the home of Garlene Chancellor on Briant Road; the resulting fire destroyed the building and her automobile. An eyewitness said the fire spread quickly and the home was wholly engulfed before County Line Fire Department could get there.

Extremely hot weather continues to plague us with no real relief in sight. Please remember that there is a burn ban in Cleveland County right now.

Macedonia Free Will Baptist Church will hold its Cottage prayer meeting Monday through Wednesday nights, July 18-20. Their revival will start July 24th at 6pm with regular services that morning at 11am. Monday through Wednesday nights, the revival services will start at 7pm.  The evangelist will be Brother Keith Hatton.  Everyone is invited to attend. Their Vacation Bible School is running this week from Monday through Wednesday nights 6:30pm-8pm with the closing program Friday night at 7pm.

Norma McCoy is being visited this week by her grand-daughter Amberlee Fletcher from Tennessee.

The New Edinburg library is collecting school supplies for needy children this summer. Donations can be made starting July 15 and will end August 13.

Billy and Patricia (McClellan) Love will renew their wedding vows at Bible Baptist Church in El Dorado on Satuday, July 16 from 1-4pm.  Congratulations to Billy and Patricia.

The Wagnon family reunion was at the West Saline Community Center last Sunday.  The day before that, we celebrated the annual All Class Reunion in the same place with 93 in attendance this year.  We had an excellent time and it was good to reunite with old friends.  Visitors were greatly impressed with the New Edinburg Museum and encouraged me to keep up the good work; I'm grateful they enjoyed it.

Ken Puterbaugh took a fall from the roof of Smith Chapel Church of God this past Monday but escaped with only a cracked heel bone.

A delicious fish and all the trimmings supper was held at the Cowboys Restaurant in Monticello, last Thursday night in Honor of Leon Brown of Pampa Tex. Leon will be 87 yrs old this month he is the first grandchild of the late Hyatt and Cory Baker McClellan. Those attending were: John and Sue McClellan, Henry and Rachel Jones, Deborah Jones, Ollie and Devlon Moring of New Edinburg. Buddy Clyde and Laverne Thompson, Lonnie and Betty Brown of Warren. Ruth and John Fletcher of Colorado Springs, Co. and Ruth, Ruby and T. H. Brown of Monticello. These relatives had a wonderful visit.

The NES All School Reunion is this Saturday starting at 10am in the cafeteria of the West Saline Community Center. All former students and teachers at the New Edinburg Schools are welcome to attend. Lunch will be potluck.

The Wagnon family reunion will be at the WSCC this coming Sunday starting at 10am.

Macedonia Free Will Baptist Church's Vacation Bible School begins next Monday night July 11, 6:30-8:00 p.m. The closing program will be Friday night, July 15.

Incidentally, I learned through the grapevine that an anonymous reader complained I never put any church news in this column but Macedonia's news. Last Saturday saw the arrival of Kim and Tina Allen's grandchild Charlie.  Congratulations to the Allen family.

The Broughton Community Choir will perform Sunday, July 3, at 7:30pm, at Sweet Union COGIC.  All area churches are invited to attend. All musical participants are asked to arrive early at 6:30pm to help finalize the planning of the program.  This event will be the conclusion of the Broughton Family Reunion this weekend.

Donations to the museum last week included an authentic WWII army raincoat complete with rank and unit patches possessed by George Barnett and donated by Mrs. Daisy Blackmon. Remember that the New Edinburg Museum will be open this Sunday from 1pm to 5pm to the public. The Museum is dedicated to preserving town and area history. It's located in what was the former 1^st grade room in the West Saline Community Center.

The NEHS all school reunion is coming up soon. It will be July 9 at 10am in the cafeteria of the West Saline Community Center. All former students of the New Edinburg schools, teachers and families are welcome. It will be potluck.

The NEHS “Last Ten” reunion will be in the same place on September 17 from 4:30pm to 8pm. Planning is still in the works for that. If you graduated from NEHS from 1975 to 1985 or taught during that period you're invited. That's potluck too. I'll keep you apprised of further news.

Mrs. Jean Parrott hosted the Waters Cousins Reunion at her home last Friday through Sunday with 46 guests from Texas, Tennessee, Alabama, Arkansas, and Louisiana.  She reports all had a good time with a fish fry on Friday and a potluck dinner on Saturday.

As of this writing, a storm system is due to come through the state reducing temperatures and hopefully bringing some much needed rain with it.

New Edinburg Volunteer Fire Department had a drill last Saturday morning with the following personnel present: Randy Linzy, Steven Linzy, Alan May, James Gill and James Boney. We're in the process of trying to recruit some younger members. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer fire fighter, contact Roy Chambers or any of the above listed people.

The Red Cross Donation drive at McClellan's Store is drawing to an end. This Friday will be the last day to donate items that will help relieve disaster victims. Thanks to all who helped out.

The New Edinburg Library asks that book donations hold off for awhile since they have more books than room. The library is located in the back room of McClellan's store and has a good selection of adult, juvenile and childhood reading material as well as DVD movies for rent. It's open whenever the store is open.

The staff of the store have also asked me to announce here that they would appreciate it if customers would be fully clothed before entering the business.

Macedonia Church's youth group grades 2-6 are at Camp Beaverfork this week. They are being transported by Randy Sanders.

Patricia Huddleston and great-granddaughter Kennedy flew from Little Rock to Chicago to Indianapolis to visit daughter Sheila. Sheila brought them home and picked up some genuine southeast Arkansas tomatoes (which, as we all know, are vastly superior to any other in North America). While in Indianapolis, Miss Patricia and Miss Kennedy went to the Indiana State Museum, the Children's Museum, the zoo, lots of shopping and swimming, and out to eat in many places.

Rick St. John and Gloria Quimby took a week long trip into Kansas and Oklahoma where they visited two antique tractor and equipment shows and the Will Rogers Memorial in Clairmore, OK. Rick and I agree that Will Rogers was probably one of the wisest Americans of the 20^th century.

The Clements-Stewart Hotel Building is open for tours every Saturday and Sunday afternoon from 2pm to 6pm. After you've visited there, come to the old school house and see the New Edinburg Museum every Sunday afternoon from 1pm to 5pm.

This quarter's meeting of the New Edinburg Volunteer Fire Department was postponed due to the passing of Ina Spears, who was the mother-in-law of President Roy Chambers. The meeting will occur this Saturday morning at 9am in tandem with our monthly drill.

The organizing committee for the reunion of the last ten NEHS classes was last Sunday at the West Saline Community Center. The date for the reunion is set for Sept. 17 from 4:30pm to 8:00pm. The second committee meeting will be in the same place on July 24 at 2pm and anyone from classes of 1975 to 1985 is welcome to attend and help out.

Mrs. Betty Taylor was visited all last week by her grandson Mitchell Taylor of Gary, Texas. She, her daughter Betty Carol Lane and Betty's children Samuel and Cecilye attend Mitchell's high school graduation in Texas the prior weekend.

The quarterly meeting for the New Edinburg Fire Department will be on this Thursday, June 9, at 6:30pm at the fire station.

Bethel United Methodist Church will have a Woman's Day Program next Sunday, June 12, at 2:30pm. The guest speaker will be Pastor Bea Rainey from Fordyce.

Mr. and Mrs. John L. and Sue McClellan celebrated their 50^th wedding anniversary with an open house at their home last Saturday with many family and friends in attendance. Congratulations to the McClellans.

Rick and Peg Cole of El Dorado, Meridith Armstrong of Arkadelphia, Doug and Melinda McClellan of Searcy and Deborah Jones visited Saturday evening with Mr. and Mrs. Henry and Rachel Jones.

Bob Kleinbeck recently had back surgery in Little Rock and is recovering in rehab. Everyone keep Bob in your thoughts and prayers while he's on his road to recovery.

Rumors abound that I'm starting a library. That's not so; we already have a good one in McClellan's Country Store and it's open whenever the store is open. I recommend you stop by and find something interesting to read there.

The Clement-Stewart Hotel is open for the public on Saturdays and Sundays from 2pm to 6pm. The New Edinburg Museum is open on Sundays from 1pm to 5pm. Feel free to stop by either or both places and take a look into our town's history.

The West Saline Community Center Board's quarterly meeting will be Monday, June 6, at 7pm in the conference room. All area residents are invited to attend. The WSCC recently acquired nine new tables and 72 cushioned folding chairs for the cafeteria through donation money. Many thanks to those who helped make that happen.

The New Edinburg Volunteer Fire Department will hold its quarterly meeting next Thursday, June 9, at 6:30pm at the fire station. All area residents are invited to attend.

The West Saline Water Users Association board meeting will also be on the evening of June 9^th. This will be their annual meeting.

Emmaus Baptist Church will be hosting its Vacation Bible School June 13th through the 16th 9am to 12pm for grades pre-K through 12. Vacation Bible School under Mrs. Ceola Warner will be held in the cafeteria of the West Saline Community Center next week from June 6 through June 10. Contact her for details.

Even though the NEHS all school reunion is coming up in early July, there's been some discussion about a special reunion for the last ten classes to graduate from our hallowed halls. Annette (Miller) Luff decided to take the bull by the horns and get such an event moving. She and others will have a planning committee meeting at the West Saline Community Center on Sunday, June 5, at 2pm in the Community Center's conference room (that's the old 5^th grade room for those of you who haven't made it there yet). Annette feels that since this is the 30^th year for the class of 1981, that class should host the event. Any and all graduates of NEHS from 1975-1985 are welcome to give input at the planning meeting and are invited to attend the reunion itself which is tentatively set for sometime in September.

One last thing about the WSCC: in the past month, we've had two near misses with funnel clouds. It's very unusual for such storms to form so near town. The old school building is a storm shelter and will be opened during such severe weather for anyone who wants to take cover there. This old brick building is one of the sturdiest structures in town and in great shape; except for a direct hit, it's the safest place you can go above ground and some people have taken advantage of its protection in the recent storms. Let's face it: metal buildings or wooden frame homes can be fatal in the face of a tornado, so don't risk your life.

My aunt Jessie Noble from Little Rock visited me Sunday afternoon.

For those who didn't know: the Clements-Stewart Hotel Building is open for tours every Saturday and Sunday afternoon from 2pm to 6pm. After you've visited there, come to the old school house and see the New Edinburg Museum every Sunday afternoon from 1pm to 5pm. Starting in June, I'll be opening the museum on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons for the same time period. Both places are greatly appreciated by those who stop to see the sights.

Visitors to the museum this past Sunday included: Royce Wolfe, Mr. and Mrs. James Atkins, and Mr. and Mrs. George Noble.

I spent a pleasant Friday afternoon visiting with Mr. and Mrs. Pat and Rita Parham in their home. Mr. Parham is a goldmine of information and town history from the 1920s through the 1940s and I learned a lot.

A lone horseman, whose name I did not hear, passed through our town Saturday afternoon. His path is taking him from Booneville, AR, to Greenville, MS where he first met his wife. The traveler is 72 years old; he took lunch at McClellan's Country Store and his meal was prepaid by a couple of ladies who would prefer to remain nameless.

Mrs. Norma McCoy and her sister Martha Cook visited cousins last week in Amarillo, TX. On their return, they stopped in Oklahoma City, OK and the OKC Monument.

I supposed many have heard the tale of the two mysterious tombstones in the woods off of Banks Road. I roamed those woods as a kid and never saw them so they were placed there sometime after the late 1970s/early 1980s. Mr. Lee Jones discovered them about seven years or so back on the land of Marvin King. Mr. King took down the names carved thereon and gave them to me. One stone held the mark of Proctor Funeral Home in Camden, so I called that place and was informed that one man was buried near Camden and the other was buried in south Bradley County. There was no legitimate reason for either stone to be in the middle of the woods here.

Recently, Mr. Lee Jones showed me the tombstones. Through the thickest of thickets we waded until we found them almost covered by leaves and other debris. I took some pictures for my own curiosity. Both markers looked like temporary jobs which were likely replaced by more permanent markers later. In all likelihood, these two markers were found in a trash heap and placed where they are now as a Halloween prank or perhaps spook time for some kids. Who knows? Well, obviously someone knows and I have a theory, but there's no point in discussing it three decades later. It's yet another example of the strange and funny little things that go on in this town when you never see.

I have a single topic to write about this week, and I'm going to bring this up one time only.

When I started the New Edinburg Museum roughly one year ago in memory of my father, I put something like $500 dollars of my own money into it... for example I had to deep clean that room after the students from the alternative school destroyed it, about $250 of paint, about $75 for new light bulbs, paint supplies and tools such as a new power drill that would drive into the block walls in order to hang pictures, paneling to cover the windows and make the place more secure, printer cartridges at $20 a pop, photo paper at $20 a bundle, and so on. That was my own money well spent.

Over the last couple of months, I undertook a campaign to raise money in order to keep the place financed and improve it. At first I asked for donations, and one person gave. I then spent my own time going to people with hat in hand. The results were great. Many people gave, some couldn't because of their own financial condition (which is understandable), and a tiny few flatly refused to help even though they could.

It was brought to my attention this Monday afternoon that a rumor is spreading that I'm in fact pocketing the donation money for myself. Ladies and gentlemen: if I were out to make money for myself off of this, I wouldn't start a history museum... I'd start a Razorback museum. Then I'd make thousands of dollars, have hordes of adoring friends and probably a lawsuit from UA.

Unfortunately, the museum is getting me none of the above. The answer to the rumor is “no, I'm not.” In one instance, I used part of a donation to put gas in my truck in compensation. That's it.

Normally, this rumor would be funny, except it's an example of a bigger problem that's been around at least all of my life. There is a select few around here who get things done, and there's another select few who are content to sit in the back of the store or on a church pew and criticize and spin stories on other people.

In answer to this rumor, let me make three points: 1) If you have donated money to the museum, and you think you have been wronged, then come to me, face to face, and tell me you think I'm a crook and you will be compensated more than you ever dreamed. If you have not donated or even darkened the door of that place, then it's not your business. 2) Even if I were pocketing donations, who's to say that I can't be compensated for the initial sum I invested? 3) Slander is actionable in court and I aim to make an example of the person or persons who started this for future generations. Hand on Bible. Who ever is spreading it, I advise you to stop. 

On the brighter side of things: the following items were donated over the last week: a picture of the old Carmical House (courtesy of Elaine McDougald), a picture of the branch of the Thompson family I came from (Marnell Parker), an antique whiskey bottle (Otus Clary), and Harvey St. John's checkbook (Rick St. John).
