This month's issue of SEALife has a nice little article about ReNew Edinburg and the Farmer's Market we've enjoyed these past few weeks with several photos and an interview with Roger McClellan. Pick up a free copy at the store or at the surrounding libraries if you're interested.

By my calculations, the Thompson Reunion is this August 22 at the New Edinburg Community Center, and Reaves Cemetery Homecoming will be August 23 on site at the cemetery. Both are always excellent events.

More from the Cleveland County Historical Society's Book Schools of Cleveland County, Arkansas which traces the development and closing of all known schools in this county: "Hall School was constructed near Mt. Elba Church through the efforts and on the land of J. A. (Jack) Hall around 1900. Although he was blind, Hall traced out several areas of the school with his hands and said “well done” to the laborers. As a result of Hall’s remark, the school was call the Weldon School at times. Bess Low taught there when it was consolidated. Bob Tucker, a Civil War soldiers who lost his leg, also taught that the Hall School. When Mt. Elba Missionary Baptist Church was organized in October 1917, it first met in the school house. Hall School was consolidated with the Marks and Good Hope School to form the Hebron School District.

Good Hope, or Green Goose School, was known as the Piney Grove School before it was moved about a mile west. Then it was located on a hill just east of the home of Louise Mitchell on Highway 189 south. Pupils used slates and wrote on them with slate pencils. Their books, which they had to purchase on their own, included the Blue Back Speller, the McGuffey Reader, and Ray’s Arithmetic. The building had one room and was heated by a wood stove. Anna Rodgers Grice, among other students recalled going into the near-by woods and gathering dead limbs, pine knots and scraps of old logs or pieces of wood to burn. Students were seated on benches. Anna Rodgers Grice recalled spelling bees and ciphering (math) matches with other area schools. Among those taught there were Lela Mitchell Miller, Maud Hall Mitchell, Vaughn Knight McGhee and Clara Marks. It was later consolidated in Hebron School in 1922."

And the heat continues... on the other hand, we could all be in a desert 6000 miles from home in 120F heat dressed full battle-rattle with a 70lb ruck sack on our backs, being shot at and worried about bombs in the road, so maybe we're better off than we realize.

Two four-wheelers owned by Mike and Doris Kee were stolen from their yard on Hwy. 97. If you know anything about it, please contact them or the Sheriff's Office. There's a $500 reward involved.

The Cleveland County Historical Society has a nice little booklet titled "Schools of Cleveland County, Arkansas." It's a good read, and here's an excerpt concerning one of our earliest schools, the Marks School. "Marks School was one of the earliest schools in the county and was established prior to 1842 because in that year it was a polling place in the Bradley County election. It was located in the Hebron community between Kingsland and New Edinburg and across the road from the Hastings Marks home. It was used as a recruiting place during the Civil War. The building was located in what is now Buddy Hall’s pasture and located about three-fourths a mile from the Marks Cemetery. It continued in operation into the 1900s. Professor B. Y. Searcy was teaching at the Marks School House after J. B. Searcy had to quit due to ill health in July 1906. In 1922, it was consolidated with the Good Hope and Hall Schools to form the Hebron School District."

I'll print a few more of these over the next few weeks, as they give an interesting insight into life around here prior to the consolidation craze that hit in the 1930s.

ReNEWing Edinburg does well Saturday morning by cleaning up around the old Lash Store. A sizable band of volunteers were on hand.

Greenland Baptist Church Food Pantry will be open July 28 at 9am to provide for the low income and the elderly.

Many of us grew up with the myth of the Kilgore killings early in the 20^th century. I have heard different versions of the event. Here are two newspaper clippings that tell the story, words and names misspelled and everything:

 The Cleveland County Herald reported: “July 10, 1902, ARTHUR and GARFIELD KILGORE.   A most unfortunate occurance took place at new Edinburg last Thursday. Two of the Killgore boys, Garfield and Arthur, went into New Edinburg, so reports say in an intoxicated condition and began a disturbance with some parties when an officer deputised Matt Ruth to arrest them, but they refused to be quieted by Ruth and fell in upon him with knives and cut badly after which Ruth left the scene of trouble and went for a shot gun returned and fired killing Arthur Killgore out-right and inflicting wounds upon Garfield from which he died Monday.  During the trouble Ransome Killgore fired at W.D. Attwood several times with a pistol but his shots went wild.  Attwood returned fire inflicting wounds with squirrel shot.”

Arkansas Gazette Feb. 26, 1903: “Feb. 25, Fordyce - W.D. Atwood killed C.R. Kilgore at New Edinburg this morning. The killing was a sequel to the killing of Kilgore's sons on the Fourth of July, when the two boys were alleged to be drunk and the justice of the peace ordered Atwood and his bookkeeper, Matt Ruth, to arrest them. One of them stabbed Ruth and Ruth shot them both. Since that time there has been ill feeling between Atwood and Kilgore, but it was thought that the trouble was over. This morning while Atwood was putting a tombstone to the head of his child's grave, old man Kilgore came with a pistol and ran Atwood out of the graveyard twice. The third time Atwood took his gun and when Kilgore appeared again Atwood emptied his gun at him. Kilgore said, "That is not fair, you have a gun and I only have a pistol." Atwood replied, "I don't want any trouble, but if you don't drop that pistol I will shoot again." Kilgore ran and got behind a pile of brush and began to fire on Atwood, who returned the fire, killing his antagonist. Atwood is a prominent business man of the place and well known throughout this part of the state. Kilgore has several grown sons and further trouble may follow.”

There wasn’t. The remaining members of the Kilgore family fled town and moved to Fordyce; the hotel building was later bought by the Stewart family.

We Eagles are saddened to hear of the death of Linda Knight last Friday. Keep her family in your thoughts and prayers.

New Edinburg Fire Department responded to a vehicle fire on Tower Road last Sunday with no injuries. NEFD has begun renovating the old fire department building (originally Howard Smith’s garage) by rebuilding the bay doors.

The oven-like heat didn’t stop the attendees of the 2015 All School Reunion at the West Saline Community Center last Saturday. The old school doors opened to welcome 78 former students and family into the AC with a potluck spread to rival any Baptist church potluck. This year, 11 of the 20 members of Class of ’65 met. Mrs. Frankie Hall reports that $365 was raised for the WSCC to buy much needed additional tables.

Meanwhile, across town at the New Edinburg Community Center, Republicans gathered to… I guess congratulate each other for being Republicans. I could never get the straight story on that, but some of them wandered into the school lost and were redirected. NECC definitely needs a road sign.

Robert Dale Thompson reports being briefly re-hospitalized in Little Rock following an altercation at his home. He would like to thank the family and friends who have been looking out for him, and especially thanks friend Steve Turner for helping clean up Robert Dale’s garden.

I hope everyone had a good Independence Day weekend despite the stormy weather which is so uncharacteristic of this time of the year.

I bumped into Robert Dale Thompson last Thursday in Fred's. Despite looking like he'd been shot out of a cannon, he was better off than he could have been. We talked for about 20 minutes before he had to go, and we had a good laugh at the typical rumor mill stories about his crash. We both understood that some people simply have nothing better to do than spread evil gossip... and then take the front pew on Sunday morning... but nothing short of the Second Coming is going to put a stop to it.

Chapel Hill Baptist Church is holding a one day Vacation Bible School on July 18. All children are invited. Contact Kristen Skelton for details.

Emmaus Baptist Church is holding its VBS July 19-23 at 6pm. All children are invited. Vans will run; for a ride see any Emmaus member or call or text 870-820-8702 or 870-820-2555.

The storms didn't stop New Edinburg's new Farmer's Market which met up town last Friday afternoon which five sellers participating. As far as I understand, this will be every Friday afternoon 4-8pm while the growing season lasts.

 

 Guests at the home of Tully and Norma McCoy is a niece Ruth Mccoy from Seattle, WA and sister Linda Mccoy Powell from Surprise, AZ.

Short but sweet this week. We've achieved Summer, and the hot weather came in right on schedule.

Here's hoping all Dads had a good Father's Day. 

The NEHS All-School Reunion is July 5th from 10:30am-2pm.  Anyone who attended school at New Edinburg or worked there (along with their family) is cordially invited to attend. We've always had a great time at these, and it seems the crowd is getting thinner and thinner each year.  Remember, the last class at NEHS (1985) is 48 years or so... we ain't getting younger. It is hoped that more younger classmates will come this year.

Family reports Robert Dale Thompson is in rehab at Baptist with physical rehab in the morning and occupational rehab in the afternoon. He's doing better but won't be good for a long time as he'll need to wear the "shell" due to his chest and back injuries.

New Edinburg Fire Department took the initiative in filling that godawful ditch between the fire department and the driveway to the cemetery. It's a work in progress with more dirt coming and some gravel.

Robert Dale Thompson is doing better after surgery last week to repair the crushed vertebrae in his back. You will recall he crashed his three-wheeler last week on Shady Grove Road and had to be taken to UAMS due to the back injuries in addition to a crushed sternum, a broken thumb and several teeth knocked out. When he gets home, he's going to need his friends.

Smith Chapel Church will celebrate its 100th Anniversary this Sunday, June 7. Activities will include congregational singing, speakers, special entertainment, historical displays and photos, and a noon meal.

Braydon Pennington has left for Army Basic Training at Ft. Jackson, SC.

Greenland Church Food Pantry will be open next Tuesday, June 9, at 9am. Greenland Food Pantry provides supplemental groceries for the low income and elderly.

We Eagles are saddened at the death last week of Jimmy Brashears of the Hebron community and the passing of  Lue (Thompson) Childers.

The benefit for Jane Coates at the New Edinburg Community Center raised over $4000 for her cause.

An extract from Goodspeed's History of Arkansas, Chapter 25, page 619: James Edgar Martin is a stock-dealer and merchant of New Edinburg, Ark., and was born in Bradley County, Ark., on May 27, 1852, being a son of Dr. John W. and Mary E. (Franklin) Martin, who were born in Virginia and Arkansas respectively. Both are residents of Warren, Bradley County, Ark., and Dr. Martin is now seventy-one years of age... a family of twelve children was born to himself and wife, eight of whom are now living, James Edgar Martin being the second child. In his youth he attended the Warren High School, and in 1873 left his home to embark in the mercantile business, first as salesman at Collins Station, in his uncle's employ, then for the firm of Martin and Goodwin of Warren. In 1876 he came to New Edinburg and became an associate of Martin and Goodwin in the firm of T. M. Goodwin & Co., but in 1883 he became sole proprietor and has since been successfully engaged in business alone. In connection with managing his store he also deals extensively in stock, and is the owner of some very fine registered Holstein and Jersey cattle. He has been grading his stock for four years past, and now has one of the finest herds in the county. He is also the owner of 1,500 acres of land in Bradley and Cleveland Counties, a goodly portion of which is under cultivation, and is accounted not only a successful farmer and stockman also. Like his father, he is a Mason and a Democrat, and his wife, whose maiden name was Mary Word, and whom he married on March 5, 1884, is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and a daughter of James Word of New Edinburg. Mr. and Mrs. Martin have two children, Anna May and John Ernest.

What a busy day last Saturday was for this normally comatose little town: Bill Watts reports his NEHS Class of '57 held its reunion and was hosted by John L. McClellan. The New Edinburg Fire Department plus volunteers collected over 30 big bags of trash Saturday morning during its Great American Cleanup reports Fire Chief Randy Linzy. New Edinburg Community Center held a fundraiser to help Jane Coates who is suffering from cancer, while West Saline Community Center held a crawfish boil with a lively attendance to raise money for its general funds. All of this with staggering humidity in progress all weekend. Congratulations to all of these groups in their endeavors.

Brother Tony Atkins has been back in the pulpit after his surgery and reports he is doing as well as can be expected and won't let any cancer keep him from preaching the Word of God.

May 11 Edition

What a stormy weekend we had, but we had no significant damage here unlike other places in the state. Despite it all, I hope all mothers here had a great Mother's Day.

There will be a BBQ fundraiser at the New Edinburg Community Center for Jane Coats. She's got cancer and is fighting hard so help her out. The event will be 5pm on May 16. Plates of pulled pork with the fixings will be sold for $10 each.

Laverne (Chambers/Miller) Thompson spent Mother's Day surrounded by her children and grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Many attended church services with her at First Free Will Baptist Church in Warren, and all joined with her later that evening.

Another story from Banks Road from back in the it was a donkey; honestly, after 47 years in the country, I've yet to learn the difference) which he kept in the pasture behind his house. Now, most prisoners, if you give them enough time, will learn how to escape from any prison, and this mule proved it; it learned to unlock the hasp on the gate. Once free, it would take off down the road to our house where it loved to graze on our grass.  Of course, Wig would come looking for it, load it up and take it home and... a couple of weeks later it would be right back down at our house.

So apparently the mule learned what Wig's truck sounded like. One day it was visiting my Dad and I in the yard when we heard Wig coming up the road. So did the mule, and he quickly hid behind our woodstack.

Wig pulls up and asked "ya'll haven't seen my mule, have you?"

My Dad replied "look over there" and pointed to the woodstack over which two ears were sticking up and slowly rotating around to listen in.

May 4 Edition

May 15-17 will see the 151st Re-enactment of the Battle of Marks' Mills... 99% of which will be in Fordyce. There will be a small demonstration skirmish at the Mark's house place area that Friday morning. I think that's very nice of them to do that.

My error in last week's column: the next community development meeting will be May 14, 6pm at the New Edinburg Community Center, not May 7 as I said. Sorry.

So this Saturday we buried one of the finest fellows in this town; Junior Lee Hayes (NEHS '70) passed away April 27 in Warren. Greenland Baptist Church held his homegoing celebration with standing room only. 

Greenland Food Church Pantry will be open next Tuesday, May 12, at 9am for the purpose of providing food and necessities for the low-income and elderly.
