Here's hoping everyone had an excellent Christmas and New Year's Day!.  For those who live out of town... it snowed here.  On Christmas night. How about that.  I can't recall another white Christmas (in New Edinburg) in my lifetime and I was born in 1968.  Debating this with Joye Splawn last week, she remembered one sometime in the early 1970s, but I don't.

Renee Smith with family and friends celebrated her birthday December 30 at the West Saline Community Center with roughly 30 people attending.

The New Edinburg Museum will be open for the first time in 2013 this Saturday from noon until 4pm, so please feel free to drop by. Admission is free.

Santa will be back in town at the New Edinburg Community Center the 13-15th at 6pm so let's bring the little ones to meet that jolly old elf and get their wish list in with him!

Macedonia FWB Church will have its Christmas program on Dec. 16 at 6pm.

The New Edinburg Museum will be open on the 15th from noon until 4pm for the last time in 2012.

Santa's appearance at the West Saline Community Center last Saturday afternoon was well received with dozens of children meeting that old elf and getting cookies, hot chocolate, and a picture of them with the Man. Dr. Laura Briant Evans, formerly of New Edinburg and Dean of the School of Nursing at the University of Arkansas-Monticello, was selected "Educator of the Year" by the Monticello/Drew County Chamber of Commerce.  Dr. Laura is a daughter of Mrs. Jean Calvert Briant of Monticello and Warren and (the late) John Franklin Briant.

By the time you read this, voting will be over as we theoretically elect our next President and decide other important issues. I guess you can tell from my wording that I don't have a lot of faith in the electoral process anymore.  Be more optimistic than I am... it's better for your blood pressure!

Tim Shaw died last Tuesday after a long illness.  Besides constructing probably 30-40% of the dentures in south Arkansas, he was well-liked and probably one of the sanest people I've ever met.

Oct. 29 Edition With Spookhouse Pic

It's here.  Cold weather hit the area Friday with frosts decorating the landscape each morning.  Enjoy.

This weekend's Spookhouse inside the West Saline Community Center was a resounding success with over 100 men, women and children taking the tour.  An independent observer reported that he went through this one and others in Fordyce, Rison and White Hall, but ours was the best by far.  Plans are afoot for another one next October. The spookhouse included such attractions as: a cannibalistic kitchen, an evil clown and nursery room, a killer school principal complete with spiked paddle, zombies galore, a graveyard, a madman with a chainsaw, and a vampire leaping out of a coffin.  Grown men ran out of this place, but everyone seemed to have a great time. Thanks goes to the following people who made this event possible: Nikki Warner, Ryan Rawls, Kathy Hollis, Dianne Harris, Destin Macon, Shawntra Rawls, Julia Crutchfield, Francis White, Jerry Brown, J. C. I was told this weekend there was some slight question about what constitutes "New Edinburg News" with some consternation about Macedonia news showing up here. My definition (the one that matters) includes any local community that actually bussed kids to New Edinburg School back in the day and receives its mail on the New Edinburg mail route.  It even covers town residents living out of the area.  I think that's a pretty fair call. In fact, a studied tour through the NEHS yearbooks will reveal a startling fact: from at least 1948 until the closing of the doors in 1985, about half of the kids attending those hallowed halls came from outlying regions such as Macedonia, Hebron, Mt. Elba, Emmaus, Mt. Lebanon, Wheeler Springs and Hollis Special.  While "New Edinburg Proper" was driving its families off, these communities kept it going. Without them NEHS and the businesses in town would have gone down decades before they did, and they'll get their due here if they want it. Spread the word.

The November meeting of the West Saline Community Center will be at 7pm Monday November 5 in the conference room.

The family of Nellie Faye Reaves will hold an 80th birthday party for her on Oct. 20 from 2-4pm at Macedonia's fellowship hall.  The event is come and go, and cake, punch and finger foods will be served.  The family requests no gifts be brought... just a photograph, a story or memory to share.

West Saline Community Center's Monday meeting was rescheduled to the next evening due to board member scheduling conflicts. Relevant results of that meeting will be in next week's edition.

Rain this weekend brought cooler temperatures and 2.5 inches of a slow, gentle rain.  The Harvest moon this year was obscured by the heavy clouds.

Geneva Landers Everright passed away in Pine Bluff last Tuesday. She was 97 and was born in 1914.  Think about that for a moment.  That means she saw World Wars I and II, Korea, Vietnam, and both Gulf Wars... six wars in all. She saw the local transition from horse and wagon to cars to the space shuttle.  She started cultural entertainment with telling stories in the living room to watching HDTV with 500 channels. She saw man fly faster than sound and walk on the Moon. She saw men's hair short, grow long and then get short again.  She saw women go from long dresses to short dresses to pants... from eyehook boots to crocs and flipflops. She started with sepia portraits you sat for in a studio and wound up with color pictures you can print at home. She saw the transition from postal letters to email and texting.  She saw the transition from walking to see your neighbor to cellphones. She saw Brown vs. BOE and Roe vs. Wade.  She saw gasoline go from pennies to dollars and horses becoming a hobby instead of standard home equipment. She saw the fall of the American Republic and the rise of American flavored Neo-Marxism.  That's how much we've changed in almost a century... what will the younger among us see before they reach her age?

Fall has fallen... finally and thankfully.


I found out only yesterday of the passing of Kermit C. Moss back in July.  I honestly had not heard the news, but am saddened to hear it.  Mr. Moss graduated from New Edinburg High School and went on to found the department of Business at what is now UAM.


Also, in regards to UAM, our former basketball coach Gene Franklin will be inducted into UAM's Sports Hall of Fame next month.

The West Saline Community Center's next board meeting will be Monday, October 1 at 6pm. We're rompin' and stompin' with projects for the down months, so if you'd like to help, come on in.
