New Edinburg Column For Christmas Week

8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. 10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. 12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, 14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.” (Luke 2:8-14 KJV)

Prayer list this week includes: Allan May, Clint Childress, and the family of Mary Ann Bryant.

Birthdays this week include: Steven Rawls (Dec. 21), Kailyn Green (Dec. 25). Happy belated birthday to: Logan Sanders (Dec. 6), Freda Green (Dec 8), Donnie Knight (Dec. 9), Sue McClellan (Dec. 9), Marilyn Rauls (Dec. 12), Sarah Hannah (Dec. 14), James Thompson (Dec. 16), Daymon Parker (Dec. 16).

Happy Anniversary to: Ronnie and Joanna McClellan (Dec. 6), Rita and Philip Lassiter (Dec. 17), Joyce and Gene Briant (Dec. 17).

Thanks for coming back to this column after my two week break. After three and a half years of writing it faithfully, I decided to get away from it for a couple of weeks.

I hope everyone has an excellent and merry Christmas this weekend.

Former NES 6th grade teacher Mary Ann Briant passed away last week in Louisiana.

NEVFD training officer Allan May spent time at Baptist in LR last week for minor surgery. He is home and doing better.

Smith Chapel Church had an excellent children's Christmas show last Sunday evening with a good attendance, as did Macedonia FWB Church.

To the person who left the Civil War language book on my porch, thank you! I'm enjoying it.

Feel free to share items of interest for this column with me.  Go Eagles.

Column For This Week

"Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, if ye have faith and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done." (Matt. 21:21 KJV)

Prayer list this week includes: Clint Childress and Sue McClellan.

Thanksgiving Edition

"7 And Jesus came nd touched them, and said, Arise and be not afraid. 8 and when the had lifted up their eyes, they saw no man, save Jesus only." (Matt. 17:7-8 KJV)

Prayer list this week includes: Sue McClellan, Clint Childress, and the family of Noma Watkins.

Birthdays this week include: James Morgan (Nov. 22), Deb Jones (Nov. 24).

I hope everyone has an excellent Thanksgiving this week.

We received at least two inches of much needed rain last week with more rain coming in this week.  Temperatures are warm for this time of the year.

Mr. and Mrs. Floyd and Nell Brown donated to the Museum a scrapbook put together by the late Noma Watkins.  The book contains memories and documents pertaining to the FHA chapte at NEHS from the '60s and '70s.  With the scrapbook came three framed pictures of FHA officers Diana McClellan, Paula Splawn and Ruth Ann Murrell.  It was Mrs. Watkins' wish that these items have a good home where they could be seen by all, and the Browns saw fit to place them within the New Edinburg Museum.  The museum will be closed for the month of December for renovations and re-open sometime in early January.

Many remember Mrs. Watkins as the Home Economics teacher at NEHS for many years.  She was well beloved by students and faculty alike.

Please feel free to share items of interest for this column, but get them to me before Monday for inclusion in that week's edition.  Go Eagles.

New Edinburg Column for November 15

We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves.” (Romans 15:1 KJV)

Prayer list includes: Randy Sanders, Sue McClellan, and the family of Asbery Rainey.

Birthdays this week include: Allan May (Nov. 13), LaTonya Jackson (Nov. 14), Jim Snyder (Nov. 15), Kim Briant (Nov. 16), Frank Martin (Nov. 17), JoAnna McClellan (Nov. 18), Sondra Parker (Nov. 19), Ruth Lasiter (Nov. 19). Happy belated birthday to Leroy Broughton (Nov. 11).

Happy Anniversary to Steven and Marilyn Rauls (Nov. 17).

Larry Hamilton was buried this past Saturday at Piney Grove. The funeral was followed by a wake and dinner for the family at the West Saline Community Center with well over 100 in attendance.

Huey Lodge #78, New Edinburg, will sponsor a soup and chili supper Saturday starting at 4pm. The cost is $6, the menu is soup, chili, dessert and drinks, and it's all you can eat. Everyone is welcome!

The New Edinburg Museum will be open this Sunday from Noon to four. It be closed during the month of December for renovation and will reopen sometime in early January. This winter, I'll also start a project of collecting names and dates from all the cemeteries in this area. Yes, I know there's a cemetery book, but it's outdated. Once everything's written down, I'll create a computer database for genealogical research and share it with surrounding libraries.

Even though it's halfway through November, it's still warm and dry. People in this area apparently have been pretty safe about burning outside, since we've had no fire outbreaks in many months although other areas in the county seem plagued with them.

With modern gun season open last Saturday, hunters are reporting mixed success and many think the deer population is significantly smaller than in previous years.

This column appears on the internet this Monday at http://WeAreTheEagles.blogspot.com. Thanks for all you do and share. Go Eagles.

Column For Week of Nov. 7th

Better is the poor that walketh in his integrity, than he that is perverse in his lips, and is a fool.” (Pro 19:1 KJV)

Your biblical Greek word for this week is hagios: a holy thing; a saint.

Prayer list this week includes: Clint Childress, Sue McClellan, Frank and Agnes McClellan, the family of Larry Hamilton, and the family of Georgia Mae Waldrop.

Birthdays this week: Christie Russell (Nov. 6), Lonnie Brown (Nov. 6), Joyce Briant (Nov. 11). Happy belated birthday to Fran Nutt (Nov. 3).

Happy anniversary to Mark and Kim Emerson (Nov. 6) and Jim and Tonya Snyder (Nov. 6).

We're now well into November. Where did 2011 go?

Brother Billy and Mrs. Glenda Wilson will be having Open House at their parsonage this Sunday, Nov. 13, from 2-5pm.

The New Edinburg Volunteer Fire Department assisted Kingsland Fire Department with a grass fire on Tower Road last Wednesday afternoon. Other than some hay bales, there was no property damage.

The New Edinburg Museum will not be open this Sunday. Starting this month, I'll be opening it on 1st and 3rd Sunday afternoons like I did last winter, so look for its hallowed doors to be open again on the 20th.

We're full swing into the deer seasons. Since deer are no longer checked at the store, I have no real idea what the body count is. Modern gun season is near; please, everyone be safe on the stand or off.

Stuff for this column can be sent to JamesCBoney@gmail.com, called in at 87-308-4608 or dropped off in person. Please get it to me before Monday in order to get it in that week's edition. Go Eagles

Halloweenie Edition

LORD, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? who shall dwell in thy holy hill? 2 He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart.” (Psa 15:1-2 KJV)

Your biblical Greek word for this week is: aggelos... an angel, a messenger sent from the Lord.

Prayer list this week includes: Frank and Agnes McClellan, Bro. Billy Wilson, Clint Childress, Sue McClellan.

Birthdays this week include: Tiffany and Brianna Hamilton (Oct. 30), Amy Pilkington (Nov. 1), Justin Sanders (Nov. 2), Sue McClellan (Nov. 2), Jack Martindale (Nov. 2), Kennedy Huddleston (Nov. 4), Logan Shaw (Nov. 5), Randy Linzy (Nov. 5), Madison Grider (Nov. 5).

We're entering the halls of Autumn with enough rain to lessen the fire danger. Still, please be careful when burning outside as we're not out of the woods yet.

Bro. Billy Wilson is fine and recovering from gall bladder surgery last week.

There will be a 50th anniversary celebration for Bill and Ouida Jarret at their home n Mt. Elba Road, Nov. 6 from 2-5pm. All friends and family are invited.  No gifts please.

The New Edinburg Museum will be open this Sunday from 1-5pm. All are welcome to stop by and there is no admission fee. NEHSers are warmly welcomed. Last week, Mrs. Evelyn Norris donated a short novel entitled “Steele Shadows” written by her Writing professor Bill Crumpler. “Steele Shadows” is a fictional account of the Union's Camden Expedition in 1864 and culminates with the Battle of Marks' Mills. Excellent reading.

If you have items you would like to see listed in this column, then contact me before Monday in order to get it in that week's edition. My phone is 870-308-4608 and my email is JamesCBoney@gmail.com Go Eagles.

New Edinburg Column for October 17

He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
2 I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. 3 Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.”
(Psa 91:1-3 KJV)

Your Biblical Greek word for this week is: ekklesia... a group of people called out into public for a specific purpose; an assembly; a church congregation.

Prayer list for this week includes: Chuck Brown, Bro. Billy Wilson, Sue McClellan, Frank and Agnes McClellan, William Rice.

Birthdays this week include: Matt Gill (Oct. 18), Kay Langford Garlington (Oct. 20).

As of this writing, storms will be moving in this week and providing a little rain. Judge Spears has ordered a burn ban for Cleveland County. Things are dangerously dry. Since Christmas, we've only fought one outside fire, so folks around here are excellent about fire safety. Please keep up the good work.

Bro. Billy Wilson of Macedonia FWB Church is currently hospitalized but is doing well. A correction from last week: Macedonia's Fall Festival is, in fact, THIS Saturday, October 22, starting at 11am. Macedonia will have booths, games, and an inflatable playground for children, and a cake walk. Later that evening, there will be a hay ride and singing. Tommy Green will once again be making his famous hobo soup, and chili will be served that evening. Thanks to Macedonia Church for providing safe, sane, and Godly activities for this season.

The New Edinburg Museum will be open this Sunday afternoon from 1 to 5pm. Visitors this weekend included: David and Priscilla Gracey of Judsonia and Dan and Martha Stuckey and Beth Stuckey McLain of Jacksonville. The Graceys, Civil War era students, are taking a slow tour of all the battle sites in southern Arkansas and stopped by to see the museum's relic collection. I had an excellent time visiting with them and the Stuckey family (who I had not seen in over 30 years). Some of you may remember the Stuckeys as related to the Attwood family, and I spent some time filling Dan in on who was still with us and who had passed on to the Great Beyond.

And... speaking of the Great Beyond: I didn't mention last week the conversation between Joye and Paula Splawn and myself during the Last Decade Reunion as we shared ghost stories concerning the old school building. The Splawns related their encounters on that property during their stay in the 1960s and early 1970s, but I was pleased to know they were basically hearing the same things I and a couple of others have heard... doors unlocking, opening and closing, footsteps in the hallway, childrens' voices and so on. I have the added privilege of having our resident spook visiting the museum outside of business hours and moving things around. If there's one thing I can't stand, it's a ghost who won't put things back where he found them.

Please send items you'd like to see in this column before Monday. I'd be happy to include whatever you'd like to see here. My phone number is 870-308-4608, my email is JamesCBoney@gmail.com, and everyone knows where my driveway is.  Go Eagles.

New Edinburg Column for October 10

7 Send thine hand from above; rid me, and deliver me out of great waters, from the hand of strange children; 8 Whose mouth speaketh vanity, and their right hand is a right hand of falsehood.”
(Psalm144:7-8 KJV)

Your Biblical Greek word of the week is: Kurios (“Lord”; he to whom a thing or person belongs about which he has the power of decision).

Prayer list for this week includes: William Rice, the Gene Briant family, Sue McClellan, Frank and Agnes McClellan, Barbara Taylor, Max and Lorene Dyer, and Billy Waldrop.

Birthdays this week include: Wilma Rawls (Oct. 12), Regina Huddleston (Oct. 15), Billy Perry (Oct. 15)

Happy Anniversary to Ethel and Erwin Dyer (Oct. 13).

Fire fighting training concludes this week at New Edinburg Fire Department. Mr. Logan Shaw is our newest firefighter and seems to grasp the fundamentals of fire fighting very well.

The Chicot-Trace chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution toured the New Edinburg Museum this past Saturday morning; I gave an impromptu presentation on local area history which mostly consisted of a two hour Q&A session. We all had a good time. Members present were: Doris Faulkner, Clora Parham (wife of former NEHS Superintendent Edward Parham), Cindy Crum, Millie and Bill Slocum, Melrose Bagwell, Helen Goggans, Kathy Wright, Katreia Abbott, Barbara Jones, Agnes Phillips, and Barbara Drye. Mrs. Joann Hall donated an antique mechanical pencil of a type once sold at NEHS in the 1940s with the school's name and address stamped on it, and over the course of that Saturday a couple of nagging historical questions were answered by former students.

Later that day, the NEHS “Last Decade” Reunion met in the West Saline Community Center Cafeteria with an attendance of roughly 70. The potluck supper was of ample and I got to re-acquaint myself with several old friends who I had not seen in decades. All in all, a great time was had by all, and we hope to repeat the event next year. Not seen in these halls for several years were former faculty members Mr. Edward Parham, Mrs. Evelyn Norris, Mr. Gene Franklin and Mrs. Jonalyn Reep, and all four were honored guests there that night. Thanks go to Annette (Miller) Luff and Connie (Miller) Shaw who were the primary organizers of the event.

Mr. and Mrs. Jason and Ashley McClellan will be given a wedding shower at Macedonia Church this coming Saturday evening at 6pm. The couple are registered with Wal-Mart. Macedonia's Fall Festival will be on Oct. 29... details to be announced.

If you have items of interest you'd like to see here, please get them to my by Monday for appearance in that week's column. My phone number is 870-308-4608 and my email is JamesCBoney@gmail.com. Go Eagles.

New Edinburg Column for October 3

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” (James1:5 KJV)

The New Testament was originally written in Koine (or common) Greek, despite what some scholars might say. Your biblical Greek word for this week is “Theos” (God). Theophilus, mentioned by Luke, simply means “one who loves God” and may not have been a specific person, but a general address to the reader.

Prayer list this week includes: Georgia Mae Waldrop, Sue McClellan, Leonard Huddleston, Frank and Agnes McClellan, Lou Ella Thompson, Max and Lorene Dyer, the Gene Briant family, Billy Waldrop, William Rice, and the family of Eugene Boney.

Birthdays this week include: Clifton Grice (Oct. 3), Allen Rippy (Oct. 4), Larry Briant (Oct. 5).

Happy anniversary wishes to Larry and Becky Briant (Oct. 8).

Fall-like weather has descended on us... finally. We're waking to chilly mornings and cool afternoons that are a welcome break from the heat of the Summer.

The “Last Ten Year Reunion” which will be this Saturday, Oct. 8., from 4pm to 8:30pm in the West Saline Community Center cafeteria. It revolves around the classes of 1975 to 1985, the last ten senior classes of NEHS, but is completely open to anyone who attended NEHS at any time. The meal will be potluck. Many are excited about this event, as am I.

The NEHS Class of 1957 will have its annual reunion at the New Edinburg Civic Center this Saturday at 10am.

I talked to Mrs. Bobbie Moseley last week, and she's doing much better. Miss Bobbie donated copies of NEHS yearbooks 1948-1951 to the Museum. Alas, no 1952 yearbook in sight yet, but I'm still searching.

Macedonia Church's Fall Festival will be October 22. More details as the date approaches. I attended Sunday School and services there this past Sunday as well as dined with friends as they held their Pastor Appreciation Day for Pastor Billy Wilson. Bro. Wilson is a fine preacher and a perfect fit for that congregation. Here's praying for many more years with him in the pulpit there. The potluck dinner was, as always, excellent with more food than anyone could eat.

Introductory fire training is in progress at the New Edinburg Volunteer Fire Department. Next week will be Personal Protective Equipment classes.

If you have items of interest you'd like to see here, please get them to my by Monday night for appearance in that week's column. My phone number is 870-308-4608 and my email is JamesCBoney@gmail.com. Go Eagles.

The first two weeks of October will be scheduled for basic Intro and protective gear classes in the evenings at the station. If you're interested in joining the department and receiving training as a fire fighter, contact Randy or Steven Linzy or any firefighter in the area as soon as possible.

Macedonia Church will hold Pastor Appreciation Day for Pastor Billy Wilson October 2. A potluck lunch will follow regular services that morning.

The board meeting for Shady Grove Cemetery will be Oct. 2 at 2pm at First Methodist Church in town. Anyone who has an interest in Shady Grove Cemetery is invited to attend.

The McClellan Family Reunion will be Oct. 8 starting at 11am at Reaves Cemetery.

We're coming close to the “Last Ten Year Reunion” which will be on Oct. 8. from 4pm to 8:30pm in the West Saline Community Center cafeteria. It revolves around the classes of 1975 to 1985, the last ten senior classes of NEHS, but is completely open to anyone who attended NEHS at any time. The meal will be potluck. Many are excited about this event, as am I.

The New Edinburg Museum will be open this Sunday afternoon from 2pm to 5pm and is located in one room of the West Saline Community Center (NEHS school building). Everyone is welcome to come by. Admission is free. NEHSers are doubly welcome. This weekend, three excellent ladies donated reading material and pics to the Museum: Mary Jane Attwood gave several books that belonged to Jim and Mary Ellen Granderson, Barbara Word Milburn donated several text books that once belonged to the New Edinburg Schools (including a couple of 1st grade readers that I remember... which should tell you how old they really are), and Becky Morgan Cheney gave copies of several pictures of the Bryant family along with picture frames. Many thanks to all three ladies for expanding your town's museum.

If you have items of interest you'd like to see here, please get them to my by Monday night for appearance in that week's column. My phone number is 870-308-4608 and my email is JamesCBoney@gmail.com. Go Eagles.

Column For Week of Sept. 19th

And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.” (Gen 3:15 KJV)

Prayer list this week includes: William Rice, Bobbie Moseley, and continue to remember the families of those who have lost loved ones over the past few weeks. It seems like we had a battery of deaths over a short time period.

Birthdays this week include: Avery Skelton (Sept. 17), Ashlyn Skelton (Sept. 19), Linda Knight (Sept. 20), Tony Atkins (Sept. 20), Herbert Moring (Sept. 21), Paula Splawn (Sept. 21), Brandi Green (Sept. 21), Peyton Sinclair (Sept. 23), Chris Hopson (Sept. 24), Marly Rawls (Sept. 24), Myla Rawls (Sept. 24).

Happy Anniversary to Brian and Dena Chancellor (Sept. 22)

More cool weather and some rain bring relief to the area these past few days.

Fire Department News: The first two weeks of October will be scheduled for basic Intro and protective gear classes in the evenings at the station. If you're interested in joining the department and receiving training as a fire fighter, contact Randy or Steven Linzy or any firefighter in the area as soon as possible. There's a plague of armchair fire chiefs in the area who like to criticize the NEFD but can't quite seem to find the guts to show up, suit up, and school us on how it's done. Now's the time to demonstrate what you're made of.

The board meeting for Shady Grove Cemetery will be Oct. 2 at 2pm at First Methodist Church in town. Anyone who has an interest in Shady Grove Cemetery is invited to attend.

The New Edinburg Museum will be open this Sunday afternoon from 1pm to 5pm and is located in one room of the West Saline Community Center (NEHS school building). Everyone is welcome to come by. Admission is free. NEHSers are doubly welcome. Visitors last Sunday included Barbara Word Milburn, Sheila Currier and Bruce McLeod.

If you have items of interest you'd like to see here, please get them to my by Monday night for appearance in that week's column. My phone number is 870-308-4608 and my email is JamesCBoney@gmail.com. Go Eagles.

New Edinburg Column for September 12

Then Job answered the LORD, and said, 2 I know that thou canst do every thing, and that no thought can be withholden from thee. 3 Who is he that hideth counsel without knowledge? therefore have I uttered that I understood not; things too wonderful for me, which I knew not. 4 Hear, I beseech thee, and I will speak: I will demand of thee, and declare thou unto me. 5 I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee.” (Job 42:1-5KJV)

Prayer list this week includes: William Rice, Bobbie Moseley, the family of Buddy Reaves, the family of Jewell St. John.

Birthdays this week include: Sharon Davis (Sept. 13), Austin Grice (Sept. 13), Beth Rippy (Sept. 14), Tammy Pennington (Sept. 17).

This community lost two more residents this week with the passing of Buddy Reaves and Jewell St. John.

The cool snap we had is gradually warming up, but we're heading toward Autumn.

The Fire Department held a night time drill this past Monday at the West Saline Community Center. The first two weeks of October will be scheduled for basic Intro and protective gear classes in the evenings at the station. If you're interested in joining the department and receiving training as a fire fighter, contact Randy or Steven Linzy or any firefighter in the area as soon as possible.

A reminder: there is some mix up as to where our fire department's boundaries of responsibility begin and end. Those living on the Russell Road up to and including the residence of Bobby McKinney fall under the New Edinburg Fire Department and that's where your dues should be mailed.

There will be a bridal shower for Sara Huddleston Hannah and Timothy Hannah next Sunday afternoon, Sept. 18th at 2:00 p.m. in the fellowship hall of Macedonia FWB Church.

The Last Ten Year Reunion will be on Oct. 8. from 4pm to 8:30pm in the West Saline Community Center cafeteria. It revolves around th ( classes of 1975 to 1985, the last ten senior classes of NEHS, but is completely open to anyone who attended NEHS at any time. The meal will be potluck.

The New Edinburg Museum will be open this Sunday afternoon from 1pm to 5pm and is located in one room of the West Saline Community Center (NEHS school building). Everyone is welcome to come by. Admission is free.

I've been asked to pass this along: there has been some gasoline stolen from a few residences across the countryside this summer. Whoever is taking it, please stop.

The board meeting for Shady Grove Cemetery will be Oct. 2 at 2pm at First Methodist Church in town. Anyone who has an interest in Shady Grove Cemetery is invited to attend.

If you have items of interest you'd like to see here, please get them to my by Monday night for appearance in that week's column. Go Eagles.

NEW EDINBURG COLUMN FOR 9/5/11

Britt, here's the column for this week. Please send back that you received it. Thanks. James

Matthew 17:20 “And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.

Prayer list this week includes: Ouida Trammell, Buddy Reaves, Frances Langford, and William Rice.

Birthdays this week include: Buddy Parker and Don Pennington (Sept. 2), Mark Emerson (Sept. 5), Tim Shaw (Sept. 4), Floyd Brown and Jennifer Herring (Sept. 6), Donna Martindale (Sept. 7) Adam Green (Sept 8), Vester Thompson (Sept. 9), Charlene King (Sept. 10).

Macedonia Church will have Pastor Appreciation Day on Oct. 2 with a lunch.

Thank the Lord for cooler weather.

Buddy Reaves is reported to be out of ICU and into a private room at JRMC.

The New Edinburg Fire Department's quarterly meeting is this Thursday at the fire station at 6:30pm. The meeting is open to the public.

The Last Ten Year Reunion will be on Oct. 8. from 4pm to 8:30pm in the West Saline Community Center cafeteria. It revolves around the classes of 1975 to 1985, the last ten senior classes of NEHS, but is completely open to anyone who attended NEHS at any time. Let me repeat that: anyone who attended or taught at NEHS at any time is welcome through the doors. The meal will be potluck.

Ms. Ava Kasich will appear at the annual “Just Us Girls” program at Kingsland Missionary Baptist Cuhrch at 10am on September 10th.

Thanks goes to Mrs. Becky (Morgan) Cheney who donated her late sister Karen's 1956 yearbook to the New Edinburg Museum. That leaves the collection lacking the NEHS 1952 yearbook. If you have a copy of any yearbook you'd like to donate, please let me know.

If you have items of interest you'd like to see here, please get them to me by Monday night for appearance in that week's column.
Go Eagles.

NEW EDINBURG COLUMN FOR 8/29/11

Psalm 89:1 “I will sing of the mercies of the LORD for ever: with my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness to all generations.”

Prayer list for this week includes: Ouita Trammell, William Rice, Buddy Reaves, the family of Toliver Blackmon, the family of Eloise Dupree Neal.

Birthdays this week include: John Brown Acres (Aug 31), Lynette Steadman (Aug 1).

This past week saw slightly cooler temperatures and lower humidity, which allowed for several outdoor activities. The Thompson Reunion was last Saturday at Reaves Cemetery with over 100 in attendance. The next day was Reaves Cemetery Homecoming where the message was delivered by Brother Dwayne Ashcraft and Brother Billy Wilson. In both events, we had good fellowship and fine potluck meals.

I meant to mention this last week but forgot: Judge Gary Spears convinced the Highway Department to fix the enormous potholes up town in front of the fire station and the water office. I've heard they will soon come back and build the area up a little more, but for now their work has helped keep away standing water from there, not to mention pulling out onto the highway a lot easier. The attentive reader will recall that the corner of the water office parking lot, after a large rain, was always ripe for stocking with bass and trout. Judge Spears is also in the process of paving one half of the Marks Cemetery Road starting from Hebron Church. He reports his plans to pave the other half next year as funds allow. Judge Spears has made great progress during his time in office in modernizing our local roads and he is to be congratulated for the work his road department has done.

The Queen and Blackmon families express their appreciation here to Melody Spears and Ronny McManus and the New Edinburg Civic Center for the use of the building for the funeral of Toliver Blackmon last Friday. Though I did not get to attend, I saw the parking spill over, so I'm assuming the crowd was large.

The next quarterly meeting of the West Saline Community Center will be in the cafeteria on September 5th at 7pm. The next quarterly meeting of the New Edinburg Fire Department Board will be September 8th at 6:30pm in the fire department training room.

The meal will be potluck, so if you can cook, bring something good, and if you're like me and can't cook then think about bringing paper plates, cokes, napkins, or whatever.

The latest word on the missing NEHS yearbooks for the museum's collection is that Mr. Wooten served as Superintendent from 1953-1955 and there will be no yearbooks from that period. Thus, two yearbooks are missing from the collection: 1952 and 1956. Mr. Floyd Brown donated to the museum an excellent picture of the Thompson Reunion from circa 1917. I can pick out my grandmother Cara Thompson as a 12 year old girl. I don't remember if I mentioned this before, but Mrs. Lorene (King) Braswell donated a few months ago a picture of a quilting bee at the Howard Smith residence in 1957, and it's filled with several ladies of times past and their children.

Ms. Ava Kasich will appear at the annual “Just Us Girls” program at Kingsland Missionary Baptist Church at 10am on September 10th.

If you have items of interest you'd like to see here, please get them to my by Monday night for appearance in that week's column. Go Eagles.

We Are The Eagles: August 22nd.

Daniel 7:18 " 18 But the saints of the most High shall take the kingdom, and possess the kingdom for ever, even for ever and ever."

Prayer list this week includes: Ouita Trammell, William Rice, the family of James Granderson and the family of Edward Lee Parham.

Birthdays this week include: Jayson Briant (Aug 21), Connie McClellan (Aug 22), Keri Cargile (Aug 22), Danny Huddleston  (Aug 23), Debbie Grice Slayton (Aug 24), Leslie Beverage (Aug 24), Marshall Wilson (Aug 29), Jackson Perry (Aug 29).

The attendance Saturday morning for the gravesides services of James Granderson was excellent despite the high temperature and humidity.

The Thompson Reunion will be on August 27 at Reaves Cemetery starting at 10am.  The Reaves Cemetery Homecoming will be on August 28 in the same place starting at 10:30am.  Macedonia Church will not have night services on that day.

The Last Ten Year Reunion will be on Oct. 8.  from 4pm to 8:30pm in the school cafeteria.  It revolves around the classes of 1975 to 1985, the last ten senior classes of NEHS, but is completely open to anyone who attended NEHS at any time.  Let me repeat that: anyone who attended or taught at NEHS at any time is welcome through the doors. The meal will be potluck, so if you can cook, bring something good, and if you're like me and can't cook then think about bringing paper plates, cokes, napkins, or whatever.

Concerning the collection of NEHS yearbooks in the New Edinburg Museum: last week I told you we needed years 1952 through 1956 for a complete collection.  I found out this past weekend from Mrs. Ollie Moring (who learned from Mrs. Geraldine Sanders) that there were three years in the 1950s where the school did not have a yearbook.  The superintendent of that three year period, Mr. H. W. Wooten would not allow yearbooks to be published citing the expense (which is strange, since yearbooks are paid for by the advertisers).  Checking the few class pictures in the West Saline Community Center, I know Mr. Wooten was here in 1953 and 1954, but I don't know if he was here in 1952 or 1955. So, of the five missing yearbooks, I know there should be a 1956, I can count out 1953 and 1954, but I do not know if the other missing yearbook is 1952 or 1955.  If anyone can help me solve this mystery, and if anyone has a copy of 1956 and the mystery year and would like to give it to the museum for the benefit of everyone, please let me know at your convenience.

If you have items of interest you'd like to see here, please get them to my by Monday night for appearance in that week's column. Go Eagles.

We Are The Eagles: August 15th.

Romans 14:8 "For whether we live, we live unto the Lord; and whether we die, we die unto the Lord: whether we live therefore, or die, we are the Lord's."

Prayer list for this week includes: Buddy Reaves, James Granderson, Ouita Trammell, Ollie Fae Harris, Harold Rice and the family of Nell Thompson.

Buddy is reported to be not doing very well.  By the time you read this, he will have had part of his left leg amputated due to blood clots.  Ollie Fae Harris' leukemia is in remission.

Birthdays this week include: Sammy Pipes (Aug 15) and James Weeks (Aug 17).

Happy anniversary to Gilbert and Cheryl Moring (Aug 14). Jason McClellan and Ashley Williams were wed last Thursday.  Congratulations go to them.

Museum news: James Weeks donated a copy of the NEHS 1962 yearbook.  The yearbook collection is almost complete with the exception of years 1952-1956.  If you have a copy of any one of those years and would like to give it, please contact me at your leisure. Thanks to Mr. Weeks for his kind donation. The museum will be open this Sunday from 1pm to 5pm.

Sheila Long briefly visited with her mother Patricia Huddleston last week while on her way to see her newest grandchild.

The Thompson Reunion will be on August 27 at Reaves Cemetery starting at 10am.  The Reaves Cemetery Homecoming will be on August 28 in the same place starting at 10:30am.

Locals Derrick Sims and Alaina Sims will be filming their movie "Come Morning" in the area in October.  They are looking for a used pick up from the years 1960-1979 to use as a prop for the movie and are willing to pay up to $1000 for it depending on the quality.  If you know of such an item, please email her at alainasims@hotmail.com or contact her sister Kristin at 352-5352.

Right now I'm in the process of switching cellphones but my email is jamescboney@gmail.com. For those who don't use email, my mailing address is 5580 Hwy 8, New Edinburg, AR 71660.  Go Eagles.

New Edinburg Column for August 8

“For the LORD taketh pleasure in his people: he will beautify the meek with salvation.” Psalm 149:4

Prayer list this week: Buddy Reaves, Jim Granderson, Emily Jones.

Birthdays this week include: Jimmy Pennington (Aug 7), Becca Cowan (Aug 8), Termekia Smith (Aug 8), Ollie Moring (Aug 13), Judy Moring (Aug 14).

Anniversary wishes to Chris and Melissa Hopson (Aug 10).

Buddy Reaves is reported to be recovering slowly at JRMC.  Jim Granderson is at St. John's Place in Fordyce and is reported to be about the same.

The Burks-Briant Reunion will be in the cafeteria of the West Saline Community Center (that's the old school buidling) this August 13 starting at 10am.

The New Edinburg Museum will be open this Sunday from 1pm to 5pm. All are welcome and there is no admission charge. Old NEHSers are showing a great interest in the newly acquired NEHS yearbooks donated by John Stewart, and I confess to have spent several hours myself closely studying them. I spotted a picture in the late 1970s of some high school students standing on the monkey bars, but the bars are located on a place on the grounds where they never were, so I think it must be a trick shot. I'm on the downslope toward tiling the floor.

The Last Ten Year Reunion has been moved to Oct. 8 due to a scheduling problem with the organizer.  This is the final set date, and the reunion will be from 4pm to 8:30pm.  It revolves around the classes of 1975 to 1985, the last ten senior classes of NEHS, but is completely open to anyone who attended NEHS at any time.  Let me repeat that: anyone who attended NEHS at any time is welcome through the doors. The meal will be potluck, so if you can cook, bring something good, and if you're like me and can't cook then think about bringing paper plates, cokes, napkins, or whatever.  Let's get together, see some friends we haven't seen in decades, and have a good time.  I hope to see you there.

Mrs. Rita Parham spent last week in Oregon visiting family while her daughter stayed with Mr. Pat Parham.

If you're on the internet and don't belong to FaceBook, you should be.  It's a fantastic resource for finding old friends and sharing information.  I recently started a FaceBook page called "You Probably Went To New Edinburg Schools If..." and several dozen of us Eagles are having a great time reliving old school memories. Remember Chuckwagons and Nutty Buddies for a dime each?  Remember Dugan Word buying candy for the little kids? Remember when class began each morning with the Pledge of Allegiance and the teacher reading a chapter from the Bible? We've been talking about these things and more, so if you're an Eagle and you're on the net, please join us!

I visited with Mr. Danny Myers last Saturday.  He showed me the fantastic renovations he's accomplished on the old Mary Frey home.

New Edinburg Column for August 1

Psalm 16:1-3 "1Preserve me, O God: for in thee do I put my trust. 2O my soul, thou hast said unto the LORD, Thou art my Lord: my goodness extendeth not to thee; 3But to the saints that are in the earth, and to the excellent, in whom is all my delight. "

Prayer list this week includes: Buddy Reaves, Jim Granderson, Emily Jones, Max and Lorene Dyer, Frank and Agnes McClellan, Bobby Brwn, Sue McClellan, Leonard Huddleston, David McClellan, Ollie Moring, the Ricky McClellan family, the Gene Briant family.

Jim Granderson, as of this writing, is in St. John's Place in Fordyce.  Buddy Reaves had a heart attack Saturday night and hit his head which caused bleeding on the brain.  He had emergency brain surgery Sunday morning to stop the bleeding and remove a blood clot.  He's in JRMC and reported to be doing better.

Birthdays this week include: Ashley Sanders (July 31), Brenttany Gatewood (August 4), Jacob Brown (August 5).

Despite occasional huge thunderstorms, we are still extremely dry.  Please don't burn outside unless you have to do it.

Visitors to the Henry and Rachel Jones home over the last week: Holly and Cole Hanry of Junction City, Allison Dallen of Broken Arrow, OK, and Ricky and Janis McClellan. Allison and Deb Jones visited Peg and Ricky Cole of El Dorado and Holly, Rhett, and Cole Hanry of Junction City last weekend. They celebrated Rhett's birthday with a fish supper.

Ricky and Janis McClellan of Veckville, TX spent the weekend with Larry and Becky Briant. Ricky also visited with John and Sue McClellan.  Doug and Conner McClellan of Searcy visited John and Sue McClellan this weekend also.

Macedonia's revival services last week went well.  Mt. Elba Baptist Church held its revival last week with Evangelist Rodney Grice presiding over the services.

The school supply drive is still on at McClellan's Store.  There are children in this area who will need supplies for this coming year and could use your help!  Contact Kristen Skelton at the store (352-5352) to find out what's needed.  Most of the list I've seen is inexpensive items easily picked up at any chain department store.

The Last Decade Reunion is scheduled for Saturday, September 17 at 4:30pm at New Edinburg High School Cafeteria.  Graduates and attendees of NEHS are invited to come.  It will be potluck.

John Stewart donated a ton of yearbooks belonging to the late Joe Daniel and Michael Frey to the New Edinburg Museum last week.  The official collection is now 1948 through 1985 with the following exceptions: 1952-1956 and 1962.  If you can fill in those gaps and would like to donate yearbooks that could fill those spans, please contact me.  Thank you John for your help.

If you have items of interest you would like to see in this column, get them to me by Monday 5pm in order for it to appear in that week's edition. New Edinburg Column for July 25

Psalm 119 1-4 "1Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the LORD. 2Blessed are they that keep his testimonies, and that seek him with the whole heart.  3They also do no iniquity: they walk in his ways. 4Thou hast commanded us to keep thy precepts diligently."
Prayer list this week includes: Emily Jones, Max and Lorene Dyer, Frank and Agnes McClellan, Bobby Brwn, Sue McClellan, Leonard Huddleston, David McClellan, Ollie Moring, the Ricky McClellan family, the Gene Briant family.  Jim Granderson is in the hospital in Fordyce with excessive fluid in his body; he and his family would appreciate visits from friends.
Birthdays this week: Doug Thompson (July 24), Aubrey Huddleston (July 25). Joey Posey (July 26), and Cristy Cathey (July 30).  Happy belated birthday to Tully McCoy (July 20).
Happy anniversary wishes to Shelly and Jeremy Grider (July 24).
The latest meeting for organization of the big Last Ten Reunion was Sunday afternoon.  In attendance this time were Annette Luff, Connie Shaw, Steve Queen and myself.  The biggest hurdle right now is locating a few students who have drifted off.  The final meeting will be August 7 at 3pm. The Last Reunion is for anyone who graduated from 1975 to 1985 at NEHS.  The reunion itself will be September 17th from 4:30pm to 8pm at in the school cafeteria.
Thanks from me to: Randy Linzy, Steven Linzy, James Jackson, Tim Shaw, and Logan Shaw.
There is a rumor afloat that the New Edinburg Post Office will not fold into Kingsland Post Office.  Let it be so.

The rest of this column is about Macedonia FWB church, like it or not.  They're in revival this week until Wednesday night with Brother Keith Hatton preaching.  I got a taste of his preaching Sunday morning; I attended and ate delicious potluck lunch with the congregation afterwards. There will be a bridal shower for Dakota Moring and Stephanie Hackney on August 6 in the fellowship hall at 6pm.  Lastly, Donnie Knight donated $100 to Macedonia's youth group.

We Are The Eagles: July 18th Edition

Psalm 119:21-23 "21Thou hast rebuked the proud that are cursed, which do err from thy commandments. 22Remove from me reproach and contempt; for I have kept thy testimonies.  23Princes also did sit and speak against me: but thy servant did meditate in thy statutes. "

If that isn't enough, I may have missed some others this time around, but computer problems ate my calendar software which I'm trying to restore.

Anniversary good wishes: Marnell and Marshall Parker (July 21).

The Macedonia Free Will Baptist Church's VBS closing program was held last Friday night with great attendance and was reported to be a real blessing.   Cottage prayer meetings there were Monday through Wednesday nights of this week, and Revival will begin next Sunday morning with Brother Keith Hatton. The Sunday night service will be at 6 p.m. and Monday through Wednesday nights will begin at 7 p.m.  Everyone is invited to attend.

The Last Decade Reunion for NEHS is still in planning; the next planning meeting will be in the cafeteria at the West Saline Community Center at 2 pm on July 24. The reunion itself is tentatively set for September 17th from 4:30pm to 8pm in the same place.  Anyone who graduated from NEHS from 1975 to 1985 is encouraged to attend.

Jimmy and Michelle Reaves were in Canada for a couple of weeks due to the death of Michelle's father.

Tully and Norma McCoy are being visited by their grand daughter Amberlee from Tennessee.

Last Wednesday was eventful, to say the least.  That afternoon saw sweltering conditions produce a thunderstorm that dumped varying amounts of rain; I received 4.5 inches while those south of town received 1.5 inches or so.  Lightning from the storm struck the home of Garlene Chancellor on Briant Road; the resulting fire destroyed the building and her automobile. An eyewitness said the fire spread quickly and the home was wholly engulfed before County Line Fire Department could get there.

Incidentally, I learned through the grapevine that an anonymous reader complained I never put any church news in this column but Macedonia's news. That would be because that church's members bother to let me know what's going on. At the end of each and every column, I put my contact information. If it isn't printed here, it's because you didn't send it in like a normal person would. I can't read minds.

If you have items of interest you would like to see in this column, get them to me by Monday 5pm in order for it to appear in that week's edition. My phone number is 870-308-4608, and my email is jamescboney@gmail.com.  Go Eagles.

New Edinburg Column For This Week: June 27

Proverbs 3:13-15 "13Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding. 14For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold. 15She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her."

New Edinburg Column For This Week: June 20

Matthew 6:1-2 "1Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven. 2Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. "

Happy birthday this week to: Annette Luff (June 19), Jody Nutt (June 19), Patricia McClellan Love (June 21), Tandy McClellan (June 22). A belated happy birthday to Fred Gilbert (June 16).

I hope all Daddies here had a great Father's Day.

As of this writing, a storm system is due to come through the state reducing temperatures and hopefully bringing some much needed rain with it.

New Edinburg Volunteer Fire Department had a drill last Saturday morning with the following personnel present: Randy Linzy, Steven Linzy, Alan May, James Gill and James Boney. We're in the process of trying to recruit some younger members. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer fire fighter, contact Roy Chambers or any of the above listed people.

The Red Cross Donation drive at McClellan's Store is drawing to an end. This Friday will be the last day to donate items that will help relieve disaster victims. Thanks to all who helped out.

The New Edinburg Library asks that book donations hold off for awhile since they have more books than room. The library is located in the back room of McClellan's store and has a good selection of adult, juvenile and childhood reading material as well as DVD movies for rent. It's open whenever the store is open.

The staff of the store have also asked me to announce here that they would appreciate it if customers would be fully clothed before entering the business.

The NEHS all school reunion is coming up soon. It will be July 9 at 10am in the cafeteria of the West Saline Community Center. All former students of the New Edinburg schools, teachers and families are welcome. It will be potluck.

The NEHS “Last Ten” reunion will be in the same place on September 17 from 4:30pm to 8pm. Planning is still in the works for that. If you graduated from NEHS from 1975 to 1985 or taught during that period you're invited. That's potluck too. I'll keep you apprised of further news.

Remember that the New Edinburg Museum will be open this Sunday from 1pm to 5pm to the public. The Museum is dedicated to preserving town and area history. It's located in what was the former 1st grade room in the West Saline Community Center.

Macedonia Church's youth group grades 2-6 are at Camp Beaverfork this week. They are being transported by Randy Sanders.

Patricia Huddleston and great-granddaughter Kennedy flew from Little Rock to Chicago to Indianapolis to visit daughter Sheila. Sheila brought them home and picked up some genuine southeast Arkansas tomatoes (which, as we all know, are vastly superior to any other in North America). While in Indianapolis, Miss Patricia and Miss Kennedy went to the Indiana State Museum, the Children's Museum, the zoo, lots of shopping and swimming, and out to eat in many places.

Mark 4:21-25 “21And he said unto them, Is a candle brought to be put under a bushel, or under a bed? and not to be set on a candlestick? 22For there is nothing hid, which shall not be manifested; neither was any thing kept secret, but that it should come abroad. 23If any man have ears to hear, let him hear. 24And he said unto them, Take heed what ye hear: with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you: and unto you that hear shall more be given. 25For he that hath, to him shall be given: and he that hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he hath. “

This quarter's meeting of the New Edinburg Volunteer Fire Department was postponed due to the passing of Ina Spears, who was the mother-in-law of President Roy Chambers. The meeting will occur this Saturday morning at 9am in tandem with our monthly drill.

If you wish to donate to the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, please bring any material items such as clothes, toys, canned food, etc to Kristen Skelton at McClellan's Country Store. Monetary donations must be mailed to: SE AR American Red Cross, 211 W. 3rd Ste. 250, Pine Bluff, AR 71601. Their office phone number is (870) 534-7312. Any and all help is sorely needed.

Seen on a church sign: “A busy spirit makes a body too busy to be a busybody.”

Someone recently told me I should keep my opinions out of this column. Here's my opinion: someone should have been writing this column years ago so I wouldn't have to do it.

I appreciate any and all who contact me with information for this column. If you have stuff you'd like to see here in print, please get it to me before Monday 5pm for inclusion in that week's edition. My phone number is 870-308-4608, my email is JamesCBoney@gmail.com, or get it to me in person or on FaceBook. Go Eagles.
